It can be hard to find nonfiction that is engaging but not too hard to read. This book is so interesting and is a good reading level. The chapters are several pages - not too long or short. The athletes included are diverse, which is really refreshing. Highly recommended.

In reality, they probably should be given more credit for the obstacles they faced and overcame as youngsters. KID ATHLETES does just that. Presented in an entertaining and relatable manner that is sure to appeal, the book shows how the world’s greatest athletes faced the same difficulties all kids deal with growing up.KID ATHLETES provides a well-rounded list of individuals that most kids will likely recognize (save a few). While some will inevitably question the omission of some sport stars (like Mia Hamm or Tim Tebow, for example), I felt the athletes selected for the book were suitable enough as they covered a wide variety of sports that are sure to widen the scope of a child’s view of athletics (baseball, basketball and football, as well as soccer, tennis, boxing and even sumo wrestling). Each entry describes the childhood of a specific athlete and addresses a particular hurdle that was cleared on their paths to greatness. The stories are well presented, fun and never too serious. The writing is easy to follow and understand. The artwork (with caricatures of the athletes as children) adds a degree of humor and “cuteness” that kids should appreciate. I was initially caught off-guard as many of the art injections serve as part of the story being told and not simple eye candy.I felt the best aspect of the book is that kids will likely be able to identify/relate with many of the issues these athletes faced as children:- Babe Ruth – trouble-maker- Jackie Robinson – trouble-maker- Billy Jean King – girl determined to- Peyton Manning – embarrassing moment in front of classmates- Danica Patrick – girl who was as daring as the boys- Bobby Orr – small-fry plays tough- Michael Jordon – kid klutz overshadowed by a big brother- Tiger Woods – kid with big dreams- Yao Ming – young giant- Gabby Douglas – bullied by teammates (and coaches)- Babe Didrikson Zaharias – better than the boys … in all sports- Bruce Lee – from cha-cha dancing to Kung Fu superstar- Muhammad Ali – constructive alternative to avenge a stolen bike- Jesse Kuhaulua – oversized kid to sumo champ- Julie Krone – little girl tames a wild beast- Lionel Messi – pint-sized soccer wizardKID ATHLETES is a fun book that illustrates examples of dedication, practice and determination to kids without getting preachy or boring.

One great thing about them moving into sports is that they can highlight a diverse range of inspirational people. As great as the presidents are, only one of them isn't a white man. The people chosen for KID ATHLETES range from reigning gymnastics Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas to sumo legend Jesse Kuhaulua (Takamiyama Daigoro). There's a nice blend of current competitors and historical figures as well as a variety of sports represented.The stories are kept short and simple. I wasn't familiar with any of them, but I'm not a sports fan. I found Jackie Robinson's childhood particularly interesting. Each chapter ends with some career highlights, so I was sad that Billie Jean King's didn't mention the Battle of the Sexes. Doogie Horner's sketch-like illustrations add a huge amount of appeal to KID ATHLETES. They're very cute and give the book a personality beyond biography for kids.I think KID ATHLETES would make a fantastic gift for any child interested in sports. Not surprising, since Quirk Books has the books-that-make-great-gifts market cornered. The biographies presents aren't particularly special, but the figures highlighted are truly interesting people and the presentation hits the sweet spot between bright and adorable.I passed my copy onto my niece, who is in the second grade, because I thought she might enjoy it. She's pretty athletic herself and does competitive dance. She's been reading one biography a night and has one left to go. When I took her out for breakfast this Sunday, she was excited to tell me how much she was enjoying the book. She's also been reading parts of it out loud to my nephew, who is in Kindergarten and was MVP of his touch football team. He likes it too! There's definitely a range of appeal.

Curt writes beautifully;  it's very readable and his overall message is indisputably valuable, especially in these times of electronic gadgets.  As the book points out, in recent years we find our kids can't even tie their shoes!  Thus, in order to truly learn science, they need access to these sorts of hands-on opportunities more than ever.  So hooray for the very valuable notion of community science workshops, such as have been pioneered in California!Paul Hewitt, Author of Conceptual Physics

Curt Gabrielson runs the Watsonville Environmental Science Workshop and works with science education in East Timor. The book is written for beginners and, although it caters for educators, it was very useful and interesting for me as a parent.

There are tons of projects with a good range of difficulty. I believe it would be a great book for any kid (or adult!) who likes 'tinkering' and building random projects. There are very detailed descriptions of the projects to explain how everything works, and how it relates to the real world.One thing to note, is that I was expecting a bit more pictures, and less words. If purchasing for a younger child, just know that they will likely need some adult assistance with the projects.The one negative comment I have is in the quality of the print. The book I received is completely misshapen. The Right side edge is roughly a quarter of an inch larger than the left side. The printing on EVERY page is crooked, including the cover. It's like it was printed in the basement with consumer level equipment. Or the pages were cut out by a child. That's the only reason I've deducted 1 star from my review.... Although I'm still not convinced it's worth subtracting an entire star. But definitely worth noting.Would this stop me from purchasing the book? Not at all. It's the quality of the content that is really important. But for the price... I'd expect better quality from the publisher.

By Sharelle Moranville As in her three earlier novels for young readers (Ghost Girl, Singing Hands, and Here Lies Linc), Ray makes history accessible and compelling by framing it with a terrific story. Twelve-year-old Ren, discontent, lonely for her dad away in the military, angry with her mom for getting on with her life, decides to run away and have her own adventure. She doesn’t run any farther than her bicycle will take her: down the road to Fortune. Fortune is like many ghost towns scattered across America: beneath the disrepair and dereliction lies a vibrant history. Based on an Iowa river town which once thrived as part of the pearl button industry, Fortune is now almost deserted. But an old schoolhouse has been turned into a hotel for quirky residents, and Ren takes a room there. Hildy, the owner of the schoolhouse/hotel passionately longs to turn the gym into a button museum, but she is in danger of bankruptcy. Ren opens her heart to Fortune. She befriends a younger child, tries to help Hildy realize her dream of the button museum, and meets a cute boy her own age who also wants good things for Hildy and the hotel. Through the efforts of Ren and her new friends, a mystery is solved, the hotel is saved, and Ren and her mother share a new understanding. The story is imaginatively conceived, well researched, and beautifully written.

Her dad is serving in Afghanistan and, before he left, he moved out of the family home. Now her mother has made a new friend named Rick and Ren fears that her parents are headed for divorce. To try to break up the friendship, Ren runs away from home and winds up in Fortune - a nearby ghost town.Hildy has opened up the old school as a boarding house and is busy searching it for a hidden treasure. She is also turning it into a button museum to let others know about the history of the town which was one a center for making shell buttons.Ren makes friends with a lonely young boy named Hugh and together they explore the school to try to find the hidden treasure. They are sometimes helped by Hildy's grandson Tucker after Hugh and Tucker finally become friends.The story gave an interesting history of a little known industry and was also a good story about learning to accept changes. I enjoyed getting to know Ren and learning more about shell buttons.

Translated into English some 20 times since the novel appeared in two parts in 1605 and 1615, and at least five times in the last half-century, it is currently available in multiple editions (the most recent is the 1999 Norton Critical Edition translated by Burton Raffel). Yet Grossman bravely attempts a fresh rendition of the adventures of the intrepid knight Don Quixote and his humble squire Sancho Panza. As the respected translator of many of Latin America's finest writers (among them Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Carlos Fuentes and Mario Vargas Llosa), she is well suited to the task, and her translation is admirably readable and consistent while managing to retain the vigor, sly humor and colloquial playfulness of the Spanish. Erring on the side of the literal, she isn't afraid to turn out clunky sentences; what she loses in smoothness and elegance she gains in vitality. The text is free of archaisms the contemporary reader will rarely stumble over a word and the footnotes (though rather erratically supplied) are generally helpful. By Philip Haldeman Edith Grossman's is the hot new translation, but there may be a tendency to confer too much praise on a fresh reading. From what I have sampled, I have no doubt of Grossman's excellence, but this is not the "definitive" DQ (no one's is), and frankly, after some comparison of the early chapters, I've decided to spend my time with Burton Raffel's translation, now only a decade old. Raffel sometimes opts for a colloquial word or two, but it's never jarring, and his overall style seems not only less pretentious to me than Grossman's, but a superior combination of a modern reading with a traditional "tone." Tone and style are important, and Raffel sometimes makes Grossman seem too abstract or fussy, though this is difficult to describe. Raffel's phrasing is more focused and vigorous than Grossman's--though both are said to be accurate. Let me offer a couple of examples that shifted me toward Raffel:Grossman:"Some claim that his family name was Quixada, or Quexada, for there is a certain amount of disagreement among the authors who write of this matter, although reliable conjecture seems to indicate that his name was Quexana. But this does not matter very much to our story; in its telling there is absolutely no deviation from the truth."Raffel:"It's said his family name was Quijada, or maybe Quesada: there's some disagreement among the writers who've discussed the matter. But more than likely his name was really Quejana. Not that this makes much difference in our story; it's just important to tell things as faithfully as you can."(Notice how Raffel makes immediately clear in the last sentence what Grossman so literally translates.)Grossman:"His fantasy filled with everything he had read in his books, enchantments as well as combats, battles, challenges, wounds, courtings, loves, torments, and other impossible foolishness, and he became so convinced in his imagination of the truth of all the countless grandiloquent and false inventions he read that for him no history in the world was truer. He would say that El Cid Ruy Diaz had been a very good knight but could not compare to Amadis, the Knight of the Blazing Sword, who with a single backstroke cut two ferocious and colossal giants in half."Raffel:"He filled his imagination full to bursting with everything he read in his books, from witchcraft to duels, battles, challenges, wounds, flirtations, love affairs, anguish, and impossible foolishness, packing it all so firmly into his head that these sensational schemes and dreams became the literal truth and, as far as he was concerned, there were no more certain histories anywhere on earth. He'd explain that Cid Ruy Diaz had been a very good knight, but simply couldn't be compared to the Knight of the Flaming Sword, who with one backhand stroke had cut in half two huge, fierce giants."Notice that Grossman is rather fussy-sounding in the phrase: "countless grandiloquent and false inventions he read that for him no history in the world was truer." Compare with Raffel, who always seems to solve little problems like this with charm, precision, and even a little wry swagger that's so appropriate to Cervantes' intent. So my advice is to seek out both of these new translations and spend a little time with each before deciding. Don't take others' opinions that Grossman's has superseded Raffel's. Grossman avoids some of the more colloquial English one may find in Raffel, and this may please snobs, but the accuracy of Raffel's translation is not in question, and overall he seems to me to have done the best job.

487 of 506 people found the following review helpful. Faulkner's Favorite By A Customer Faulkner said Don Quixote was his favorite book and that, along with The Bible, he dipped into it yearly. I'm not sure what Cervantes would have made of some of Faulkner's more troublesome work, but the world has designated Don Quixote the Father of the Modern Novel and perhaps the greatest novel ever. I'm a fan of this book and a habitual (some would say neurotic) comparer of translations. Since I don't read of speak Spanish, I have to rely on the English translations that have been published. There are three that are worthwhile: Ormsby's, Samuel Putnam's and now Edith Grossman's. Grossman, who is the translator of Garcia Marquez's books into English, has produced a translation that's contemporary and authentic--somehow, not an oxymoron. It has a fresher feel than Putnam's (the translation Nabokov used when teaching the book), though I wouldn't say it supplants Putnam. If you're looking for a copy of Don Quixote in English, Grossman's translation is a good first choice. She manages to maintain the feel of the language Cervantes wrote in (as far as I can tell) yet her translation, as the NY Times reviewer noted, is as readable as the latest novel from Philip Roth. You can't go wrong with Putnam or Grossman, but on this one, I have to give the nod to Grossman.

Quintessential Masterpiece of European Literature By Adam Dukovich I have read this book both in English and Spanish, and I can honestly say that it loses very little of its power, wit or message in translation. For all those who have considered reading this book, here are a few good reasons: this book is a very nuanced look at escapism and identity, a wonderful parody of knight stories, along with being a rousing (and very funny) adventure centering around the titular hero, a man who reads one too many books about knighthood and chivalry and decides to become a knight-errant himself. After recruiting a sidekick and choosing a lady to woo per narrative convention, he sets out to conquer the forces of evil, which include, among other things, giant windmills and rogue "knights". Cervantes' insight and ability to parody were both ahead of his time, and in a time where escapism and voyeurism are well and thriving, it is not difficult to imagine someone watching too many TV shows and believing they're a wild west outlaw or what-have-you. A very fascinating experience, and it works well in any language. Highly recommended.

Chambers A children's book of stories told in rhyme about ancient Rome didn't sound overly appealing to me, but believe it or not, the book works. It's a short, fun read about different events and historical figures in the Roman Empire, beginning with the mythical founding of Rome by Romulus and Remus, and going through the fall of the empire. The book makes little effort to organize events and people chronologically, so it's not always overly helpful as an introductory history to the Roman Empire, but as best I can recall, the poems are factually accurate. They're also well written and often humorous, and if young readers have even the slightest familiarity with the Roman Empire, the poems will add measurably to their knowledge as well as being fun to read.Very much recommended for grade school-age children, and also a fun read for adults.

By delicateflower152 “Battle Bugs: The Cobra Clash” continues the story of Max Darwin and his association with the Battle Bugs. Summoned from the school library by a signal emanating from “The Complete Encyclopedia of Arthropods”, Max falls into quicksand and is rescued by Dobs, a dobsonfly, and logistics bug. He learns that his best friend the scorpion Spike has been bugnapped by the reptiles and General Komodo. General Barton, the titan beetle that leads the bug forces, asks for Max’s assistance in rescuing Spike. Buzz, a hornet; Webster, a shy spider; and Gigantus, a giant centipede; and, along with Max form the SWAT (Stingers, Webs, and Toxins) team tasked with rescuing Spike.“Battle Bugs: The Cobra Clash” has well developed characters, likeable bugs and villainous reptiles. Imbuing the bugs with human personalities, yet allowing them to remain “buggy” results in some humorous situations and conversations. The rescue scenes and escape help immerse the reader into life on Bug Island and the continuing conflict between the bugs and reptiles for supremacy. Jack Patton cleverly slips interesting, educational facts and observations into the text so subtly that they become part of the story and a reader learns something without knowing their knowledge is increasing. Illustrations add appeal for younger readers and for youngsters to whom you may be reading.My six-year old grandson loves Jack Patton’s Battle Bug series. He is looking forward to our reading this book during a long flight to Atlanta. As the next-to-the-last book in the series, “Battle Bugs: The Cobra Clash” sets up the scenario for the final battle and control of the island. Although the story was interesting and it introduced some new characters, this book was not as exciting or engaging as the former Battle Bugs books. Nevertheless, if your young reader is as enamored of the Battle Bugs as my grandson is, you will want to get this book.

By Angela WB Thanks to this series, my son is a walking creepy crawly encyclopedia and we couldn't be more thrilled! We have already preordered all of the upcoming books and he asks daily if it is time for his next book to arrive. Excellent job captivating curious young minds! My son begs to look up and study all of the creatures online after reading these books and is constantly shocking people with his knowledge of all things Battle Bugs related. We can't wait to see what battles will be waged ahead!
