The Goodbye Book, by Todd Parr

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—This picture book shows young children that even when goodbyes bring sadness and unfamiliar emotions, those feelings will ease with the help of time, remembrance, and support. The Goodbye Book addresses the range of emotions someone might feel after a loss, including anger, sadness, lack of joy, and denial, as well as the desire to stop eating or sleeping. Parr explains that even when a person starts to feel better, there could be moments of grief or confusion, but at the end of the day, another person will always be available to provide love and comfort. The colorful illustrations, in an naive, childlike style and outlined in black, feature a goldfish that experiences the emotions discussed throughout the book. Young readers can infer what the goldfish is feeling by looking at the picture, and the imaginative representation gives the book a soothing tone. The Goodbye Book never specifies what the exact scenario is, making it an appropriate choice whether a child is dealing with death or another difficult situation. VERDICT An honest but gentle look at the grief that comes with saying goodbye. An essential purchase for all early childhood collections.—Liz Anderson, D.C. Public Library

Professor Winslop's lessons on mythology are the worst. But are his stories really just myths? When Maisie and her twin brother Jasper discover a Stonehenge-like monument in the woods of New Hampshire, they find themselves caught in the middle of something much darker and more dangerous than they ever imagined. Shamans, intent on bringing about a world-wide apocalypse, are planning to break through the veil between reality and myth, and the twins are the only ones capable of finding the weapon to stop them. With only days before the Winter Solstice, will Maisie and Jasper be able to stop the rising tide of evil? Reminiscent of Escape to Witch Mountain, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Wizard of Oz, The Stone Circle will entrance and bewitch readers through to its final climax.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. If you loved A Wrinkle in Time, head here next! By Sara Ross If my nine year old's behavior this morning is any judge this is an amazing book for the young reader. She's never done this before, but she read all the way to school, got out of the car reading, mumbled a half-brained goodbye, and walked into school reading. Well, OK then! We're four chapters in and I've been reading it out loud to my younger son so he can keep up with his big sis. He is equally enthralled. The story is reminiscent of the Wrinkle in Time series with less sci-fi and more historical and mythological references.Maisie and Jasper, twin sister and brother, resonate with everything from Jasper's shrugs and thrown up hands to Maisie's struggle with what she's feeling, thinking and projecting. I can see my own daughter taking it in with the internal dialog, "Yeah, I know... younger brothers!" and "I'd feel that way too if my parents left me behind."Can't wait for the next chapter at bedtime tonight!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A must read! By AT This book was a fun, yet informative read that combines the lightheartedness of childhood with the excitement of the ancient world. Myths come alive in this rendering of some of the most popular, yet distinct narratives in both Greek and Celtic mythologies. Easy to read, and a great way to lose yourself for a few hours. The gripping moments and death defying situations the Tuck twins must navigate draw you in and keep you hooked until the last page.

A Great Introduction to Myth and Storytelling By Amazon Customer The Stone Circle is fast paced, interesting, and a great way to introduce children to the nuances of myth and legend. Younger readers will be introduced to age old tales that are being told with unexpected twists, and older readers will recognize their favorite legends being played out as Jasper and Maisie are thrown into an epic adventure. It was an enjoyable read from start to finish!

Suzie Green has only dreamed of having a best friend. Someone to vent to and giggle with—and someone to help her face the Select Seven at school every day. Those girls are boy crazy, they talk in codes, and they call Suzie “teacher’s pet.” It’s not easy being a teacher’s kid! And it’s not easy being eleven, going on twelve, without a best friend. Then Co Co Langdon moves in next door. Suzie has never met anyone like Co Co. She’s from France and has traveled all over the world. And she’s never been to school, having been tutored all her life. But now that Co Co is in America, she will go to school for the very first time. And Suzie will finally have a best friend by her side! First published in 1955, Best Friends follows two girls through one unforgettable school year as they take on mean girls, a cranky neighbor, boys, and the search for a missing neighborhood dog. In the end, they’ll find out what it truly means to be best friends.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Finally Available! By Dorothy Schock I read this book as a child and spent years trying to track it down. I really wanted my daughter to read it. Never happened (she is now 27). From time to time used books came up for sale, but they were hundreds of dollars. I was delighted that Nancy Pearl was bringing this book to the public.Reading it as an adult, while slightly dated, it is just as much a joy as it was when I was a girl! The struggle with 12 year old girls against clicks and forming friendships has NEVER changed! The sweet friendship between Suzie and Co-Co is delightful!I hope a new generation of girls discovers Best Friends and falls in love with the story!

By Shelley Willis I missed the second half of the third grade because I was sick but my tutor arrange for the book mobile to co e once a month and I discovered this series of books. They were my best friends and I loved them. When I grew up I looked for them so my girls couldfead them also now after 29 years, I am thrilled to be able to share them with my daughters and granddaughters, some of my best friends.

It reflected my own post war suburban childhood and I hoped to introduce it to my students as a period piece of that era. In the spirit of Anne Of Green Gables and the Little House series it tells the age old story of friendship and loyalty. It is a wonderful book for any girl who has longed for a friend. I want to thank Nancy Pearl for bring this title back for us to enjoy again. Hopefully the sequels will soon be available too.
