A good how-to book with fairly easy projects for elementary and middle school kids--and their parents and older siblings By Si Dunn I haven't tried every project in this fun book, but I enjoy tinkering and reading about unusual and humorous ways to do things. And the projects I have attempted have been entertaining. This how-to book is well-written and has some helpful photographs and illustrations. Parents and kids could do many of the projects together. Or a big brother or big sister could help a younger sibling learn and be entertained by such zany things as (1) using lemons to light up LEDs or (2) making a boomerang from cardboard and foam or (3) using a paper clip and a foam packing peanut to make a record player (remember record players?). I have read several books in the Make: series, and some of the projects in this one seem well-suited for times when kids complain they are bored and want something new to do. But, key point, don't just hand them the book and go back to staring at your smartphone. Get involved, too. Some help and supervision will be needed.

She was NOT disappointed. She plowed through the first half of the book the day she got it and said it was even better than she had hoped. It is rare to find strong female characters in adventure books for this age group, but I think these books fill that void. I hope the Julie the Brave series continues—I know my daughter does too!

Warriors is full of action, suspense, drama, love, broken hearts, and everything you would want in a series. I thought after Night Whispers that no book could ever be better; no book could ever have left me feeling the way I was feeling. I was wrong. Sign of the Moon is amazing, easily the best in the series. In this book, I was shocked by the amazing twists and turns, and I applaud Erin Hunter for coming up with this spectacular plot. Even in the first chapter, my breath is taken away from me. There is no delay in getting to the action; no fluff to start out the story. While the plot is amazing, the writing blew me away. The descriptions are detailed, but don't draw on. The dialogue is perfectly believable, not cheesy and fake sounding. The feelings of the characters are well expressed, clearer than day. As I read, I was not in my own world, but the protagonist's world. The writing and plot is terrific and unexpected. You would be making the biggest mistake in your life if you don't buy this book now.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Best Book Ever Read By Dancing Pen CAUTION **********I WILL GIVE A FEW SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW********** This book is probably the best book I have ever read. It was so well written, and it was very exciting. Sign of the Moon also fills in the holes that were left open in Night Whispers. In this book, Jayfeather travels to the mountains to visit the Tribe of Rushing Water. He then visits the Ancients (the older cats that Jayfeather was introduced to in Power of Three), and that's probably my favorite part in the book. The current Stoneteller also dies, and then Jayfeather chooses Crag as the new Stoneteller. Lionblaze is helping to protect the Clans from the deadly battle with the Dark Forest, and he tries to work everything out more with Cinderheart. He also goes in a hole discovered inside ThunderClan territory, and finds a tuft of Hollyleaf's fur. (Any ideas as to where the hole leads?) Dovewing(Dovepaw) Recieves her warrior name after rescuing a cat that fell into the deep hole, which reveals many secrets. Dovewing journeys with Jayfeather to the moutains as well. Tigerheart tries to cover everything up by telling her he misses seeing each other, but Dovewing shoves him off and continues her life without him. Ivypool(Ivypaw) recieves her name as well. She and Blossomfall secretly go in the hole, and eventually get lost in it. They soon find a strange cat who (sort of) helps them out (For those who don't remember, it is Fallen Leaves from the Acients). Soon, Ivypool gets lost yet again, and a strange black she-cat comes up to them. She helps them get out safely, and then dissapears. Overall, I'd give this book a 9.8. It was very well-written, and very interesting. Also, **SPOILER-->** Blossomfall enters the dark forest and begins training there. My theory about the hole is that it leads to the tunnels that were discovered in Power of Three. The strange black she-cat, I think, is Hollyleaf. She dissapears into the tunnel in Sunrise, Lionblaze finds a tuft of her fur in the hole, and then a black cat helps Ivypool and Blossomfall escape. She must be alive and living in the tunnels, because when the fur was found by the rockfall, her body wasn't there. --my theory. I hope you enjoy my review, and that you will read this book sometime!! -Brooke Warriors: Omen of the Stars #4: Sign of the Moon, by Erin Hunter

Seventeen-year-old Rose Levenson has a decision to make: Does she want to know how she's going to die? Because when Rose turns eighteen, she can take the test that tells her if she carries the genetic mutation for Huntington's disease, the degenerative condition that is slowly killing her mother.

With a fifty-fifty shot at inheriting her family's genetic curse, Rose is skeptical about pursuing anything that presumes she'll live to be a healthy adult-including her dream career in ballet and the possibility of falling in love. But when she meets a boy from a similarly flawed genetic pool and gets an audition for a dance scholarship across the country, Rose begins to question her carefully laid rules.

Rules for 50/50 Chances, by Kate McGovern

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Rose has been dealing with her mother's Huntington's disease diagnosis since she was 12, and now that she looks toward college and adult life, she wonders if she will suffer the same fate. When she turns 18, she is legally allowed to take the genetic test that will give her an answer, which she thinks she needs in order to decide what choices to make about a career and family. Meeting Caleb at an event to raise money for genetic research throws a wrench in her thought process, as he lives with no fear of developing the sickle-cell disease that torments his sisters and mother. As they fall in love, Caleb shows Rose that life is about taking risks and following passions and that a test result that clears her of risk wouldn't promise safety or happiness, while one that predicted a painful degeneration would stop the indecisive Rose in her tracks. This evenly paced story is a balance between Rose and Caleb's romance and Rose's difficulties with her family, including her mother's often frustrating symptoms. Caleb is the most interesting of the characters, with a unique history and a more developed personality than the others. While this doesn't stand out from other titles about teens dealing with family illness or interracial relationships, the focus on Rose's indecisiveness and fears should appeal to fans of Gayle Forman's If I Stay (Dutton, 2009) and Lauren Oliver's Before I Fall (HarperCollins, 2010). VERDICT A general purchase for YA collections looking to beef up their teary realistic fiction sections.—Kerry Sutherland, Akron-Summit County Public Library, OH

Review

Rules for 50/50 Chances:

"This standout contemporary read should have wide appeal." ―Booklist

"McGovern skillfully engages with questions of fate, choice, and truly terrible luck." ―Publishers Weekly

"Readers will stick with Rose through her dilemma―and her decision―rooting for her to make the choice that’s right for her. " ―Horn Book

"Rose’s story is realistic and well drawn. Rose is amazingly mature and responsible, but she can be self-centered, obsessive, and impulsive. In other words, she is a very typical teenager faced with an extraordinary circumstance. This book is a solid addition to any library." ―VOYA

"A page-turning portrayal of living at risk for Huntington's disease, rich with the complex layers of tormented indecision that come with genetic screening. Would you want to know? A great read." ―Lisa Genova, New York Times bestselling author of Still Alice and Inside the O'Briens

About the Author Kate McGovern has taught theatre and language arts to middle schoolers in Boston, New York, and London. A graduate of Yale and Oxford, she currently lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she was born and raised. Rules for 50/50 Chances is her first novel.

RULES FOR 50/50 CHANCES is YA realism at its best: a moving story with a fascinating central character facing a life-altering decision. Rose's mother has Huntington's disease, and Rose must decide whether to get the genetic test that determines if she will inherit the disease. Beautifully voiced, gorgeously written. The interracial romance is fresh and well crafted, too -- and who doesn't love a cross country train trip? I can see RULES becoming an instant classic with wide appeal, a la THE FAULT IN OUR STARS. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Tackles difficult, real-life topics with poise, wisdom, and cultural sensitivity By Karielle @ Books à la Mode Rose Levenson lives by four rules:1. Don't make plans you can't keep. The Huntington's disease gene she has a 50% chance of having inherited from her progressively ailing mother is set in stone. Her mother will die from it, and Rose can see every day her condition getting worse—as for herself, she either has it, or she doesn't. Regardless, it seems like her fate is already written in the stars; what's the point of planning out a future, if by adulthood, she may not even be healthy enough to enjoy it?2. Falling in love confuses everything (so don't do it).Enter Caleb Franklin, a boy who understands what it's like to suffer under the weight of a genetic disorder, a boy from a completely different background, the first boy she's ever felt worthy enough of breaking her second rule. While Rose and Caleb's budding relationship is nowhere near consuming or romantic—it just fell a little flat for me—I found Caleb to be a fascinating choice of love interest. McGovern intelligently explores race and class differences in a mature way, rather than solely throwing them in as character devices (aka "that one black friend") as I've seen other YA novels do. I totally appreciate how she doesn't gloss over Caleb's African-American background; she incorporates its relevance into his relationship with Rose, while carefully avoiding anything too political or current to make everything COMPLETELY about race. Because that's really not the point; the point is that race isn't something that can be ignored or glossed over, because it does make a different in real life, despite what white privilege will insist. White privilege isn't just about white people having it better than black people, etc., but the inability for non-minorities to recognize that this sort of stratification exists. McGovern handles this so gracefully and naturally, without being preachy; I've never seen it done in YA (that isn't primarily about race) before. What's so conflicting about my opinions overall is that I found Rules for 50/50 Chances to be stunningly realistic and layered, but just couldn't stand Rose, our protagonist. For me to grow attached to a story relies heavily on a likable—if not relatable—narrator, and unfortunately Rose is my biggest quip about this entire book. I understand that her characterization was fully intentional on McGovern's part, especially since Rose's main flaws are pointed out by many of the secondary characters and eventually self-realized, but sludging through her narrow-minded first-person narrative was a little too irritating for me.It isn't that she's particularly bratty or stupid or mean, but she's one of those types who wallows in her own pity—in this case, due to her genetic "curse" as she calls it, completely pulling the "you just don't know how I feel!" card at every instance, without leaving much room to understand that other people, in fact, also have issues, even if not the exact same as her own. There's one scene where Caleb, the love interest, calls Rose "exhausting," and that's exactly how I feel about her: tiring, drawn-out, worthy of eye rolls. It takes her a long, long time to figure this out, but when she finally does, I felt like the book finally redeemed itself.3. Knowledge is power. The novelty of the book's plot is something to praise, for sure. I wasn't even certain what Huntington's disease was before I read this book, so it was both an educational, and emotionally charged account on how it could affect a teenager's life, even before symptoms show. The difficulty of living with a 50/50 chance for inheriting a degenerative disease is expertly illustrated from Rose's point of view. It isn't so much the misfortune of the disease itself, but rather a matter of knowing and not-knowing: a lifetime of uncertainty. This is mainly the reason why Rose is convinced that she needs to take the test to find out whether she carries the gene or not as soon as she turns eighteen. It's not HD she's concerned over, because she knows well too much about it already, watching it eat away at her mother every day. Rather, being kept in the dark is what she can't stand.Rules for 50/50 Chances won't sugar-coat anything. From the frankness of dialogue between family members and friends, and the way Huntington's manifests uglily in her own mother, it gives you an honest, oftentimes abrasive account of Rose's life, which is already hard considering she's a senior in high school. To me, the plot about her ballet career and college decisions fell to the backdrop because the primary issues with Caleb and with her taking the genetic test took center stage. While not always pretty, teenage relationships and degenerative diseases are portrayed with extraordinary authenticity here.4. Rules are meant to be broken. As Rose slowly tests herself through the hardships of competing for a ballet scholarship, the acknowledgment of her genetic results, and through the turmoil of working out her first love—and heartbreak—she learns that everyone has their own problems, not exclusively herself. Soon, she finds herself breaking all her previous, pristinely set rules, and in this way, she discovers that everyone's human and that pain is not measurable on a spectrum; no one has it more or less "worse" than anyone else just because of superficial reasons. It definitely took Rose a long time to come to this conclusion, but when she finally did, I felt triumphant. I honestly didn't enjoy this book to this extent until the last few chapters because it seemed to drag on and on with Rose complaining about this and that, but the ending was definitely worth it.Amazingly, while the main characters are hard to relate to, the book itself isn't. Rose isn't the most sympathetic or level-headed character, but McGovern approaches this complex dilemma richly and with emotional resonance.I learned a lot from this book, not only about race and difficult relationships and difficult genes, but also general astute observations from Rose's everyday life, from the lessons she learns during auditioning for her ballet scholarship, to her mom's passion for trains, which she also shares. I feel like this is the kind of book I would have loved to have read in middle school—and I don't say that to lower the audience age or cheapen its poignance; I only mean that it's an incredibly eye-opening and grounded account that has the power to vastly change the way most people think.Pros: Plot, characters, and relationships are very lifelike and well-written // McGovern's prose flows naturally and swiftly; she is obviously a talented storyteller // I learned a lot about Huntington's disease and trains (look up the California Zephyr if you don't already know what it is) // Overall narrative contains sophistication and self-awareness, despite Rose's lack thereof // Rose's family dynamic is beautiful and diverse; we experience the touching highs and all the dysfunctional lows // Ending ties everything together beautifully, and actually is the saving grace considering how prolonged Rose's petty narrative is, priorCons: Rose is not the easiest character to like and relate to (condescending towards her friends, short-sighted, self-pitying) // There isn't anything romantic or clever about Rose and Caleb's relationship; it kind of just happensVerdict: Kate McGovern tackles tough topics like genetic diseases, race and class issues, the ugliness of growing up, and the uncertainty—and blessing—of not knowing, with poise, wisdom, and cultural sensitivity in her debut novel. This is the kind of YA book I would like to turn back time and give to my adolescent self: fairly clean, but far from naïve; never happy-go-lucky, but still optimistic. It taught me a lot, and made me reflect a lot, and I think teenagers of all ages and reading levels will feel the same way. Rules of 50/50 Chances challenges perceptions and preconceptions, depicts a genetic disease that is as rarely informed on as it is hideous, and demonstrates that love, whether romantic or familial, is never as tidy or as faultless as it seems—even in a young adult novel. While I did find Rose's character to be a headache as a whole, the uncommon yet well-executed plot will stick with me forever. Mindful, mature, and genuine to its core, 50/50 Chances is a book you should 100% take a chance on.Rating: 7 out of 10 hearts (3.5 stars): Not perfect, but overall enjoyable; would recommend, but borrow a copy before you buy!Source: Complimentary copy provided by publicist in exchange for an honest and unbiased review (thank you, Goldberg McDuffie Communications!).

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. and was thoroughly pleased with this read By Kheat04 I tend to read non-fiction. I wasn't sure what to expect from reading my second YA novel, and was thoroughly pleased with this read. The story weaves together some very thought-provoking and challenging themes, including family and health, adolescence, and choice. The aspect of choice was particularly important in this story, and I found it really engaging and making me wonder about my own decisions. At times I found Rose's crisis, or perception of crisis, to not always feel like something I could believe or feel was realistic. So I asked one of my colleagues whose relative had Huntington's disease, and had two sons aged 18 and 22. She described in great detail the challenge and psychological impact the question had for the two sons. It gave me a deeper perspective on how this situation and decision impacts a teenager and his or her life, and a sense of how well the author really does capture Rose's dilemma.I'm giving this book 5 stars because the story and characters really captivated me, and made me really think about what it would be like to be Rose.

From the beginning scene in his ravaged city to the very last page, I was hooked! The characters have strength, gentleness and a strong sense of purpose. I loved reading about the hero, Dathan, as he discovers who he really is and the power he has to change. Battles, gauntlets, flying demons and time travel are only a few of the adventures in this book. I can't wait for the next one!!!

Lanser I've been interested in the trying out the adult coloring book crazy for a while now! The pictures are lovely - some are simple, some are complex. There are a wide variety of pictures and styles in the book. I have found them very relaxing to color in the evening while winding down from a busy day. I'll admit when my 7 year old daughter asked if we could color together after she saw my book, I said "sure, but in one of your books..." I didn't want to share! The paper is heavy weight and very nice, nothing like the paper in cheap books for kids. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for something relaxing and special :)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Helping me reignite my passion for coloring By Rachel D. One of the things that I have been trying to do is build in more relaxation times for myself. I have found that by looking back over my childhood, I wanted to look at the hobbies that brought me pleasure. One of those hobbies was reading, so I am trying to do more reading for fun in my life. Another hobby that brought me pleasure was coloring. Growing up, I could sit and color for hours on end. I was pleasantly surprised to find that many coloring book publishers are now publishing coloring books for adults, with more complex patterns and themes. Many of these books are meant to help with getting the adult to relax and be less stressed.I was happy to be asked to review a new coloring book, Heroines of the Old Testament by Betsy Karounos. I have been coloring on Friday nights, while the kids are watching their weekly movie. I have taken to coloring on Sundays when I am trying to relax and the kids are playing and my husband is watching the NFL. I love the format of Heroines of the Old Testament, as it leads the reader through the story of Eve to Esther. The designs and outlines are beautiful and just aching for someone to color them.I have only colored a couple of the pictures and I will say that I am unconventional in that sometimes I prefer to color with markers over colored pencils. I am pleased that the paper quality in this book is great. The paper is a nice quality, so the markers don't bleed through to the other side, like ordinary coloring book pages. And I will say that this coloring book has re-ignited my love of coloring that I had when I was a child, and it is helping me to relax! If you are looking to get into the art of coloring, I would highly recommend you start with Heroines of the Old Testament by Betsy Karounos.DISCLAIMER: I was sent a copy of this book by Hachette Book Group in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Do you need to relax? By Bethany Adult coloring books are a popular craze right now! Have you tried one? I have seen them on Pinterest and in stores so I was excited to be able to review this one called Heroines of the Old Testament.I enjoyed coloring in this book. It has tips at the back on using colored pencils. I use a mix when I am coloring. It seemed the Sharpies I used bled through to the backs of the pages so I did not like that the pictures were printed on both sides of the paper. If you only used colored pencils though, this would not be a problem. The paper is a good quality though. There were all sorts of designs and pictures to color. Some were even spread over two pages. I have shared this book with my 11 year old son too, and he started coloring a picture. This would be a nice Christmas present for someone on your list who needs to relax! This book was sent to me for my review by the Hachette Group.

For anyone who has ever felt left behind, Simona Ciraolo, the best-selling author of Hug Me, paints a touchingly sweet portrayal of the transience of childhood and how adolescence and growing up can be a truly mystifying experience.

Simona Ciraolo is a Sardinian born author and illustrator whose witty and endearing tales recently won her the Sebastian Walker Award. Ciraolo studied animation at the National Film School in Turin, Italy, before moving to the United Kingdom where she undertook an MA in children's book illustration at the Cambridge School of Art. She has also worked as a freelance 2D animator for children's TV shows and illustrated five picture books for an independent Italian publisher. Simona lives in South London.

Whatever Happened To My Sister? From Flying Eye Books

Review "The art is arresting and amusing, a skillful combination of watercolor and other media, using a limited palette. [...] the book is noteworthy for taking the viewpoint of a younger sibling instead of the more common theme of a beleaguered older child. Gently humorous art and text transform a simple story into a haven for children feeling temporarily sibling-wary. A tender, whimsical look at growth, change, and sisters."—Kirkus Reviews"Ciraolo handles soft crayon with practiced (not to mention fashion-magazine-worthy) skill, drawing domestic scenes and clothing in a palette of warm grays and olives, accented with vivid orange. The advent of adolescence in an older sibling is a less common theme for a picture book, and Ciraolo treats it with style and charm."—Publishers Weekly"Rendered in muted watercolors and pencil, the illustrations display the action and a sense of isolation. Readers may see their own growing siblings reflected in this thoughtful book."—School Library Journal

By Nicola Mansfield A sweet story about sisters written from a unique perspective of the little sister wondering about her pubescent older sister. Her sister has changed, doesn't like the same things, or play with her like she used to and she wonders if she has been switched. Just when she gets sad and realizes how much she misses her older sister, big sis comes along and invites her to do a big sister thing with her and comments on how much she has grown! Very sweet. Can't say I'm too fond of the art though, too much grey and brown for my tastes.

Mabel can't believe it when one day she looks into a puddle and sees her reflection.

She had always imagined she was a bright, beautiful caterpillar, but she realizes with horror that she's skinny, green, and plain looking. Her bright, cheerful smile turns into a frown.

But then a red-bellied robin flies out of the sky to talk to Mabel. "Oh don't worry, little Mabel! I'm not going to eat you!" the robin says. "My name is Eloise, and I have been watching you from afar. What seems to be the problem here?"

When Eloise hears what it is, she tells Mabel that beauty isn't determined by what's on the outside, but by what's on the inside. She advises Mabel to continue being a kind caterpillar and sharing her beauty with others.

Mabel-who had always had a loving heart-follows Eloise's advice by striving even harder to help her friends in the meadow.

Join Mabel as she learns the true definition of beauty and discovers that friendship and kindness can change the world.

By Saba Ansari Mabel's Meadow enlightened my heart and as an educator, I would highly recommend this for anyone who is looking for a book with strong vocabulary, problem solving methods, wonderful open ended questions and conversations, and most importantly, teach kindness through realistic approaches that connect wonderfully to children in the everyday world. Mabel's Meadow will remind you of your inner child spirit, and will be a great book to cognitively challenge children of many ages. This is a must have for any bookshelf located in a school or home. Mabel's Meadow won't let you down.

A book with a good message to help make a young person have a better self image By Janice Knudson I read this adorable book to my almost 3 year old grandson. He and I loved the illustrations and identified the characters together on each page. He still is a little young to fully understand the true message in this book, but I can see this story teaching a lesson as he hears it in the future. This book tells about how outer beauty is not as important as who you are and your inner beauty. My grandson liked seeing these characters on each page and knew who they were as we read the story together. The pictures and colors held his attention. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to teach a good message to a young person, especially if the child is not feeling secure in who they are.

The illustrations are kid friendly and consistently well done. Mabel feels good about herself until she sees her reflection and then wonders why anyone would want to be her friend. Being nice to others is so important and Mabel had always been thoughtful and courteous. Others liked Mabel and made her feel good about herself. The caterpillar-to-butterfly ending helps Mabel feel even better about herself.

Celebrate Durga Puja With Me! (From The Toddler Diaries), by Shoumi Sen

About the Author ‘From The Toddler Diaries’ started as a series of poems that Shoumi wrote for her daughter. This collection, in its stapled makeshift binding, was the center of several bedtime story sessions and play dates with friends. Inspired by this interest amongst kids and encouraged by their parents, she decided to publish the collection. Shoumi is a Strategy, Sales and Marketing professional at a leading Energy Management company. She grew up in Bombay and Dubai and studied Engineering at BITS, Pilani and the University of Maryland, College Park. She loves to travel, has lived and worked in many countries, and currently lives in Los Angeles, California with her husband and daughter. ‘Celebrate Durga Puja with Me’ started as a thought while holidaying in Australia. Shoumi and her family attended Durga Puja celebrations in Brisbane with an old friend she grew up with in Bombay. “Bombay comes alive with festivities for five days every year during Pujo”, they reminisced, as they attended a condensed ‘weekend Pujo’, which is typical outside India. Memories of celebrations from her childhood form the essence of her collection – the frenzied ‘dhunuchi’ dance during Durga Puja, the rhythmic chants of the oarsmen during Onam or the expression on a friend’s face as you snuck up to smear ‘abeer’ during Holi! “I wanted to recreate these memories in verse for my daughter and kids all over who may not have the opportunity to experience festivals the way we did.”

The book is a nice way to introduce little kids to the festivities associated with Durga Puja. I have to say I learnt some aspects about the puja through the book as well. Nicely written and the illustrations are too good. Nice job by the author and illustrator!

A Lesson About Vanity By A Customer The is the delightful tale of a horse named Nitter Pitter who thinks his good looks make him "better" than all the other horses. As a result, they exclude him from their games. After being accidently knocked into a pond one day, Nitter Pitter learns that having friends is more imporant than being beautiful. Like the other books in the 'Serendipity' series, this one teaches an important lesson in a subtle and friendly way.

Harrell Our son absolutely loved the Serendipity books as a child, so we passed down his small collection (12 books) to our granddaughter. I thought it would be fun to add a few books to the series for her, and was shocked to learn that there are now over 70 books in the series! So I picked out another dozen or so for this birthday. And I think "Daddy" will have just as much fun reading them to her! These books have sweet stories, with the most beautiful illustrations by Robin James (just amazing). I believe any child would enjoy them.
