Ever since I first saw the Crimson Corsair in the Vanity Fair spread, I thought he looked cool. I wanted to know more about him. This story follows him and his crew in a race across a desert planet against other pirates searching for a lost treasure. Captain Sidon Ithano, as he is also known, is an awesome character. There's a toy coming out of him and his first mate that I think will be one of the few The Force Awakens figures I actually buy. This story has it all. Like a lot of the new canon, it takes inspiration from all the Star Wars films and tv shows. It even starts with a Hondo quote! Fans of The Clone Wars tv series MUST read this!I found myself using wookiepedia to get accurate ideas of what the characters looked like. The Ortolan pirate known as One-Eye is such a cool image. The chapters are very small, which made it very easy to read. This story is full of adventure as well as comedy. I love when Star Wars stories make allusions to classic lines and such in creative ways. I never had a bad feeling about this book while I was reading it.I give this short story a 5/5. I want more! I am so much more intrigued by the character of the Crimson Corsair. I want to follow his crew on many more adventures. I really hope Landry gets to continue writing their stories.

It's exactly the kind of fun, rich, exhilarating Star Wars story that works really well just weeks before the release of a new film. It succeeds in getting the reader invested in the characters sure to roam the halls of Maz Kanata's castle, provoking the imagination in just the right way. It's a pirate story, a treasure hunt story, and a high-speed chase story all within the framework of Star Wars. What's not to like? It's worth the read, the re-read, and the handoff to a friend.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic By Nathan A really fun Star Wars short story. The Crimson Corsair as a bad ass and he, along with at least one of his crew members, will be in the upcoming film; and by the looks of it, the Captain looks to be somewhat of a significant character. Therefore, I would read this solely just to become somewhat acclimated to a small part of the new movie. Also, if you're a fan of the "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" TV series, there's a nice little treat for you within. Great read!

The description clearly states these are cut-out crafts and that's what you get. I spent several snowy afternoons pretending to be a kid again and having a Grumpy good time listening to music while playing with this book. If you are a Grumpy minion then you definitely need this. Oh, my age? I'm not a kid but an over-the-hill goofball granny. Fun for kids and adults who need a little play time from the professional grind.

1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not as expected By Braves ball Not as expected. I thought it would demonstrate paper crafts kids could do rather than cutting out pre-printed images of grumpy cat and folding on the dotted lines. I do not recommend except for younger kids who would be more likely to want this limited crafting experience.

I'm glad this book made them out to be fascinating creatures that they really are. Most are predators but some are very peaceful. The book listed many different kinds of sharks and gave a little info on each one with some absolutley stunning photographs. I read this with my little one and we both loved it! The whale shark is our favorite, being the largest sea crature and very peaceful. We've read some of the other books by Kay and enjoyed them and this one was no different. Nicely done with exquisite photos and very enjoyable to share with any child.

The last few pages mention good points about how sharks are not dangerous to people, but how people are very dangerous to them. Great photos. Would read other books in the series.

Review

“Each sweetly illustrated page is just a glimpse of everyday life, but for children in two-person families surrounded by bigger clans, also a reminder of the immense love in their own homes, too.”—The New York Times

"Mourning's wispy figures playfully cavort through the four seasons, with large smiles, high-fives, and hugs. There is no shortage of encouragement and love."—Kirkus Reviews

"[I]n this tribute to single parents and their singleton offspring . . . Matthies never explicitly compares these families to others, nor does she talk about the choices or circumstances that created the pairings. She keeps her message simple and clear: Head counts don't matter. All you need is love."—Publishers Weekly

“This sweet picture book is a warm and loving celebration of tiny families.—Booklist

Ignite (Defy, Book 2) (Defy Trilogy), by Sara B. Larson

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—Resolute heroine Alexa Hollen returns in this sequel to Defy (Scholastic, 2014). Damian's betrayal still stings and Alexa continues to deny her love for him, but an uneasy peace with Blevon launches the female King's guard into emotional turmoil: Someone is attacking distant villages of Antion, a young prince is kidnapped, and Blevon appears to be the culprit. Meanwhile the Dansiians, responsible for the black sorcerer Iker's devastating involvement with Damian's father, have sent a delegation to Antion under the pretense of forming an alliance, but the enchanting Lady Vera reveals a more sinister agenda. This fast-paced fantasy novel laced with political intrigue spends a lot of time in Alexa's head as she is torn between her duty as the finest personal guard to her king and a desperate desire to be with her soul mate. Jealousy is a common theme with these realistic characters, whether it's Alexa, Damian, Rylan, or Lady Vera, examining the complicated ramifications of one person's decisions. Antion's politics add a level of depth to the world-building without being too distracting or overbearing. Readers who enjoy love stories that include multifaceted relationships and a suspenseful plot will be enthralled.—Jamie-Lee Schombs, Loyola School, New York City

LarsonBook Two of the Defy seriesPublisher: ScholasticPublication Date: December 30, 2014Rating: 4 starsSource: ARC sent by the publisherSummary (from Goodreads):Murder, kidnapping, and forbidden romance abound in this thrilling sequel to Sara B. Larson's acclaimed YA debut, DEFY.Alexa continues to harbor a secret love for the newly crowned King Damian, yet she remains by his side as his guard and ever committed to helping him rebuild Antion and reclaim the hope of Antion's people. However, when a new threat to Damian and his kingdom emerges, and blame is cast on the once friendly nation of Blevon, Alexa knows things are not what they seem. Once again the fate of her country hangs in the balance. Will Alexa be able to protect her king and uncover the true enemy -- before it's too late? What I Liked:I know I gave this book and Defy the same rating, but this one is definitely better than the first book (and I mean that nicely, not snidely). I liked Defy a lot, but I wanted more from the story, and less from the romance. One reason why I loved Ignite as much as I do is because the romance is much more clear-cut (thank God).In Ignite, a new threat has arrived. Blevon seems to be threatening Antion, burning villages and sending parties to attack the king. Meanwhile, a beautiful noblewoman named Vera has been given refuge at Antion, someone much more suited for King Damian. But Alexa knows that Vera has a secret motive to seduce the king, just like she knows that Blevon can't be behind the attacks - someone much more powerful must be manipulating the country. But how many players are in the game, and how many threats can Alexa uncover?Larson up the ante in this book, putting Antion and Blevon at odds. Everyone in Antion wants to go to war with Blevon, but Damian (and Alexa) don't believe that Blevon is at fault - perhaps a black sorcerer is. All the while, Damian is falling into the web of Vera, who seems to have power of her own - or is Damian just that captivated by her? Not to mention that one of the royals is held for ransom, and by a very powerful enemy... who wants Alexa in exchange for the royal.Phew! Lots of crazy going on. Plenty of deceit, ransom, murder, angst, heartbreak, and action. I read this book in two sittings (only getting up for lunch and things), and it went by really quickly. The plot is very fast-paced and interesting. The romance - let me talk about that for a bit. It might seem like the romance is all sorts of twisted, right? Damian, Alexa, and Rylan were locked in some sort of weird love triangle in Defy, but no longer. Personally, I didn't think it was much of a love triangle at all - to me, Damian always seemed to have Alexa's heart. But then there's the matter of Vera seducing Damian in this book - pshh. We can deduce that this is a plot twist of a sort, with no real feelings involved. I'm all for Alexa and Damian in this book (and series), though I don't mind Rylan as much as I did in Defy (hate Vera though). The romance between Damian and Alexa is very angry and passionate and raw and sweet all at once - love!I like Alexa more in this book. She continues to show her toughness, her strength, her grit, but she also breaks down a little and shows a softer side. To Damian, whom she really loves, but she pushes him away, thinking of what's best for the kingdom. To Jax (Damian's little brother), who wants to learn to be as brave as she. To her friends, and even those who aren't her friends. I like that Larson really spearheaded the issue of Alexa being a female in the King's guard - the author brings this up a lot, which makes the issue more authentic and plausible.I really like Damian, though sometimes I find it hard to believe that he is the King. He seems and acts too young sometimes - not in an immature way, but in a, well, young way. However, I so want my own Damian. Is that too much to ask for?The book ends on an okay note, though there is definitely room for another novel. It's not a cliffhanger, not quite, but there NEEDS to be more to the story, to resolve the conflict at the end that wan't quite wrapped up. The book has a bit of a bittersweetness [is that a word? Should be] to it, but not to the point where you like OMG THIS SUCKS. Just... book three. There needs to be a book three. What I Did Not Like:I can't think of anything specific that I didn't like - I wish the author could have included just a little more background of the events that happened in book one? Only because I really could not remember many things. For example, Alexa's parents, their death... this comes up again, in Ignite, and I wish I had remembered more from Defy. Of course, this could just be me!Would I Recommend It:If you read book one, you MUST read book two. It gets better in book two - take that as you may. If the romance bothered you in book one, relax, it clears up in book two (in a really obvious way). If the fantasy bothered you, then keep reading because things get rocky between countries. Basically, it wouldn't be a bad idea to keep reading this series, whether you liked book one or not!Rating:4 stars. I really hope there is a book three, because this series just CAN'T END YET. I mean, it could, but I feel like there is a much more fulfilling ending to come... so, everyone, cross your fingers for a book three announcement!

Sadly, I could not wait to finish this one to the point I sped read through some chapters. Main character was the all around super hero, while the other characters were a mere shadow and hardly developed. Definitely not paying money for the third one.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. The expectations of the first book were not upheld. By Liz Sim Not as stong as the first book. The strength of the character is lost on romantic feelings. The plot is blaringly obvious to everyone but the characters. Many of the scenes are repeated conversatons from the previous book and within this one. Overall a let down.

Meet the Melendys! The four Melendy children live with their father and Cuffy, their beloved housekeeper, in a worn but comfortable brownstone in New York City. There's thirteen-year-old Mona, who has decided to become an actress; twelve-year-old mischievous Rush; ten-and-a-half-year-old Randy, who loves to dance and paint; and thoughtful Oliver, who is just six.

Tired of wasting Saturdays doing nothing but wishing for larger allowances, the four Melendys jump at Randy's idea to start the Independent Saturday Afternoon Adventure Club (I.S.A.A.C.). If they pool their resources and take turns spending the whole amount, they can each have at least one memorable Saturday afternoon of their own. Before long, I.S.A.A.C. is in operation and every Saturday is definitely one to remember.

Written more than half a century ago, The Saturdays unfolds with all the ripe details of a specific place and period but remains, just the same, a winning, timeless tale. The Saturdays is the first installment of Enright's Melendy Quartet, an engaging and warm series about the close-knit Melendy family and their surprising adventures.

The Saturdays (Melendy Quartet), by Elizabeth Enright

From Publishers Weekly Welcome Back! Old favorites are being reissued in force this fall. Elizabeth Enright's Melendy Quartet follows siblings Mona, Rush, Miranda (Randy, for short) and Oliver. First published in 1941, The Saturdays kicks off the series and centers on the foursome's Independent Saturday Afternoon Adventure Club (I.S.A.A.C.), an allowance-endowed venture formed so one lucky Melendy can enjoy a solo sojourn each week. In The Four-Story Mistake (1942) the family moves from their city brownstone to the country; Then There Were Five (1944) describes what happens when the siblings befriend an orphan; and in Spiderweb forTwo: A Melendy Maze (1951), when everyone else leaves for school, Randy and Oliver are left to solve a mystery. The author's charming pen-and-inks punctuate all four volumes. (Sept.) Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I'm now in my 50's and can't count how many times I've gone back and reread it. What a treat to see that, at last, some astute editor has had the savvy to bring it back into print so modern audiences can enjoy it--and in a durable hardcover at that. This is a perfect read-aloud for families, in part perhaps because of the age-spread of the four children: preschoolers will envy six-year-old Oliver his lone excursion to the circus, young teens will identify with 13-year-old Mona's stirrings of adolescent rebellion as exemplified by her decision to have her "long butter-colored braids" cut off, and middlers will like 10-year-old Randy's creation of the Independent Saturday Afternoon Adventure Club and the unique situations that befall her (like befriending the formidable and exotic Mrs. Oliphant or tumbling out of a rowboat on Central Park Lake). Each child is a real human being and an individual character whom Enright draws to perfection. And the setting (New York in, probably, early 1940 or '41) will intrigue the younger generations and bring a glow of nostalgia to the older ones. This book should be in every household library in the land!

Thoroughly enjoyable family fun By A Customer My daughter, age 9 and I both read The Saturdays over the past few months along with Four-Story Mistake. We loved this family and found each character fun. I loved their adventures and wish I had read these books as a child. I recommend this book to anyone who values their child's mind and wants to protect them from the abundance of nonsense in some children's literature.

This is an addition for readers (and potential readers) who are (or would be) as puzzled as I once was when the book said the Melendy children played a noisy game of "Dumb Crambo". Over 20 years after I first read THE SATURDAYS, I was lucky enough to get a copy of VICTORIAN PARLOUR GAMES by Patrick Beaver that includes it. To paraphrase, in Dumb Crambo, the players are split evenly into two teams. One team leaves the room while the remaining team chooses a verb. When the first team comes back in, the second team tells them another verb that rhymes with the first verb. The first team must guess the secret verb by acting it out. For example [not the one given], if the secret verb is "fly", the first team might be told "try". If they guess it's "spy", they act out someone spying on someone else. If they're wrong, the second team hisses them. The first team keeps trying until they act out the right verb. It's called "dumb crambo" because it's a variation of a game called "crambo." In the original, only one person leaves the room and any kind of word may be chosen. The guesser is still told a word that rhymes with the secret word. The trick is that you have to ask questions that might get you the secret word WITHOUT naming the word you're guessing. For instance, if you think the secret word is "bus", you might ask "Is it a big ground vehicle that carries a lot of passengers?" I think it shows something of the personalities and intelligence of the Melendy children that they would enjoy Dumb Crambo.

Review I think we've found a new favorite. My 6 year-old and I sat down to read one of the Pack-n-Go Girls Adventures - Mystery of the Troubled Toucan - and when I was called away for other mama duties, he just kept on reading it by himself. If that isn't the seal of approval then I don't know what is. - Marti Dumas Books

The characters are easy to relate to and the story includes lessons about the animals of the Amazon as well as life lessons and some difficult social lessons that are worked through by the girls. Also included in the book are fun facts about Brazil. Common Portuguese word meanings and pronunciation along with travel tips, weather, money and food are included in the back.

This story not only touches on the thrill and excitement of traveling to new and mysterious places, but also the sad but true dilemma many children face when their parents separate.Hopefully, they will understand they are not alone. Love prevails. Also a good introduction to the rainforest for children. ..

Having read all of the other Pack-n-Go books, she couldn't wait to see what happens in Brazil! As in the other books, the main character are young girls from different cultures who become friends and have some sort of adventure. In this case, the location is set in the amazon rainforest and the adventure involves saving botos (pink river dolphins) from poachers. I love that these books touch on real issues, but do so in a gentle way that opens the door for a deeper conversation. We had a long discussions about ecosystems, conservation and endangered species and even the ethics of hunting/poaching after reading this book. We loved all of the Portuguese words and phrases sprinkled throughout the book (with English translations). We can't wait for the next book in the Brazil series.

Baby Penguins Love their Mama, by Melissa Guion

From School Library Journal PreS-K—Mama's many baby penguins watch and learn all week long as she models proper penguin behavior and teaches necessary skills. Her exuberant brood reassure her that she will always be their mama, no matter how big and skillful they get. This heartwarming family story is told in simple language, appropriate for a preschool read-aloud, while mixing in some harder vocabulary ("Thursday was preening practice. Nobody liked preening practice"). Guion's watercolor and pencil illustrations perfectly accompany the text, using icy blues and small splashes of color against crisp white backgrounds. The babies are full of personality, while the expression on Mama's face ranges from good-natured patience to a look during Saturday squawking that will be familiar to parents and teachers everywhere. Elementary schools and public libraries should add this lovely confection to their collections, especially where Guion's Baby Penguins Everywhere! (Philomel, 2012) is popular.—Rebecca Dash Donsky, New York Public Library

From Booklist Mama Penguin and her waddle of baby penguins are always busy, with classes every day of the week: swimming on Monday, sliding on Tuesday, preening on Thursday. A mother’s job is never done, until Sunday, that is, when she gets to take a long nap. Mama Penguin is proud of her diligent brood, and she looks forward to the day when they are as adept at penguin skills as she is. When one suggests that they might eventually be better than she is, this leaves her at a loss. What will her purpose be then? The answer is cute and heartfelt, and it will be much appreciated on Mother’s Day. Guion’s companion to Baby Penguins Everywhere! (2012) has a message that should resonate with parents who find themselves at the mercy of their children’s busy schedules. Although the penguins are rendered in blacks and grays, the watercolors stand out against the copious white space (courtesy of Antarctica), in a style reminiscent of Oliver Jeffers. Because of the many baby penguins, there is lots to notice in the illustrations. A sweet book with broad appeal. Preschool-Grade 1. --Kara Dean

Review A Children's Book of the Month Club Selection!Praise for Baby Penguins Love Their Mama: "Guion's . . . illustrations perfectly accompany the text. The babies are full of personality, while the expression on Mama's face ranges from good-natured patience to a look during Saturday squawking that will be familiar to parents and teachers everywhere. Elementary schools and public libraries should add this lovely confection to their collections."—School Library Journal"[C]ute and heartfelt, it will be much appreciated on Mother’s Day. I had just packed up my kids in the car to run some errands when our copy of this book arrived in the mail, so I gave it to my boys to read while we drove. I listened as my eight year old read it to my five year old. It is really precious, but my heart swelled when he got to the end and the little penguin babies let their mama know just how much they love her too, and my son said "Mom, this book reminds me so much of how much you love us too!"It's not often that I can't decide if I like the story or the illustrations more in a book, but in Baby Penguins Love Their Mama, I am drawn equally to both. The sketches and colors are simple yet adorable, as is the story. This book has made it's way to my top five favorite children's books.

Beautiful message about maternal care, love and sacrifice, about mothers’ selflessly giving to their children By Helpful Advice “Baby Penguins Love their Mama” written and illustrated by Melissa Guion is story about special persons in our life, that born us and cared for us while we were small, and although I’m a dad and love my kids a lot, usually to our mother can be attributed what we are as a people. And though all moms are similar when it comes to the care of their babies, Mama Penguin is special due to number of children she is taking care of; while her every day passes in the moment she is still the happiest Mama Penguin in the world…This story brings a beautiful message about maternal care, love and sacrifice, about mothers’ selflessly giving to their children.Text of this book contains occasional words that will be more complicated for younger readers, but because the illustrations of penguin world are made in interesting and attractive style, “Baby Penguins Love their Mama” will be liked by kids between 3 and 5 years. Therefore “Baby Penguins Love their Mama” can be recommended for those children that read bedtime stories with their moms after the big part of the day being separated due to kindergarten or mother’s work, in order to once again remind them how much their mothers love them.

Every day she does something with them for one day, they will no longer be babies and they will have to care for themselves. It is exhausting work but mama loves her babies and at the end of the week, mama takes a well-deserved nap. One of her babies asks her what would happen if after all her work they become a better penguin than her. Mama considers this question as her babies climb all over her. Mama has no answer as her babies surround her, giving her a big surprise and telling her that she will always be their mama. What a sweet story. On the pages, the illustrations are busy portraying mama’s activities with all her babies, showing her constant attention to her children. There is never a dull moment as all the children are busy and mama must keep them in line and show them how to learn the ways of the penguin. The illustrations are not busy but just enough to draw attention to the scene being played out and the watercolors are simple and contrasting enough for small children.I want to thank YABC for a copy of this novel for I received this book as a part of YABooksCentral.com 12 Days of Christmas. This is my own opinion of this children’s book.

Review "The thing about words that have come from somewhere deep inside the universe is that they will set imaginations on fire. These words, alongside their whimsical illustrations, do just that for young and old alike."  - Nic Askew, Film Maker, Poet, Father of 3 Young ImaginationsThe thing about words that have come from somewhere deep inside the universe is that they will set imaginations on fire. These words, alongside their whimsical illustrations, do just that for young and old alike. -- Nic Askew - Film Maker, Poet, Father of 3 Young Imaginations "Soul Biographies"

From the Author Jambo Fellow Adventurers!  "You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step." - Martin Luther King Jr. I often think of how these frequently repeated words, from a giant of our times, so perfectly apply to the spiritual logistics behind all manifestations. I even saw them play out in the making of this, my second children's book. It began as an idea borrowed from a particularly enchanted Note from the Universe, about signs appearing along a path leading the reader into the jungles of time and space! What would such signs say? Wouldn't they be simple enough for anyone to understand? Would they hint at our power, the free will we possess, and the greater love that makes it all possible? Would kids understand them? Would their parents understand them?   I couldn't see it working, but I could feel that it would. So, as I urge audiences, whenever possessed by a dream, for which you don't know what to do next, do anything. I wrote -- a little here and there, in dibs and dabs -- without clarity, insecure, and doubting myself. I deleted some, added more, copied, pasted, and started over. And although I abandoned the process and quit the book twice, I was pulled back by a deeper sense that it could still work, and over the course of many months, Your Magical Life emerged, ultimately brought to life by the incredibly talented illustrator, Virginia Allyn. What is it you soulfully dream of doing? Don't wait. Dally no further. Start, and the staircase will appear. To Your Magical Life,Mike Dooley     A book to help grown-ups understand what children still remember...   Imagine, if you can, the person you'd be today, if as a young child you were read books that:  *  explained that you live in a magical world of illusions?*  showed all of the earth's creatures were part of your family?* instructed you how to confidently shape your destiny?*  encouraged you to make-believe and pretend for the rest of your life?*  reminded you that your life's path will present itself when you let it?* taught you that everyone is powerful, deserving and loved beyond measure? * revealed that your magnificence preceded your choice to adventure into the jungles of time and space?   Whoohoo! Yeah, you'd be even cooler, if that's possible. Today, in your coolness, you can be a bringer of light to children who already know these truths, in a world that would have them think otherwise.   We live in the most exciting times in recorded history. The winds of truth and personal empowerment are beginning to blow like never before. Your Magical Life helps children harness the energies that are their birthright, in a world of their own shaping, in which they are loved and guided each day.

Parents assured me that they LOVED it! and - asked some very "interesting" questions and comments! Also my daughter works with children from troubled families and she is using it as a tool for healing and increasing self confidence for these children - all ages! Book can be used with groups of children also.

My boy liked the story a lot By Nancy cure My boy liked the story a lot.He keeps playing minecrafts games so he has keen interest to listen about minecrafts stories.I read him out the whole book and he could not wink his eyes during the read.I enjoyed the part of nurse and the overall story was worth reading.

Nyx found love in a hopeless place where all her friends drink alcohol and other things that could kill them and Nyx couldn't believe that all of her friends would keep drinking alcohol and she final found someone who cares about her and not the why she dressed or how she looked. It is so sad she nearly lost the love of her life T-T.
