7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Another great book by Jan Brett By E. Ervin For years I have said that Jan Brett was the most wonderful illustrator imaginable for children's books. I still say that. Her stories are great, too, of course but her illustrations are magical. The Turnip is no exception. She has done it again. I love sharing her books with little people. We always have so much to discuss about the pictures. I enjoy reading and looking at her books by myself as well. Jan Brett's books are always a treat and something to look forward to. The Turnip is definitely a keeper.

If you liked The Mitten, you'll love The Turnip By BrittyMama I remember growing up reading and loving The Mitten, 20th Anniversary Edition by Jan Brett so when I saw she had a new book out I was very excited to read it to my son.Based on the old Russian folk tale of the same name, Jan Brett once again does a fabulous job of bringing to life a story from another country and another generation. Here we have Badger Girl who discovers that she has grown the largest turnip anyone has ever seen. When it is time to harvest, however- it is too big for her to pull out. One by one her friends, family, and neighbors pass by and try to help.I love that the story itself has a similar kind of sequential one-by-one plot to it as the old favorite mitten story (one by one the animals crawled into the mitten- now one by one they help pull the turnip). Her beautiful drawings are as stunning as ever and pay homage to the story's country of origin through their setting and outfits.

I loved these books growing up and wanted to continue the tradition with my own kids. I read this book in the book store the other day and was very disappointed. There seemed to be missing parts of the story, I actually flipped back and forth between pages to see if I had missed something. My kids nor I were impressed. The illustrations of course were great though, wish the story matched up.
