From School Library Journal Grade 3-6-The Weasels are in love in the Wainscott Woods. Zeke Whitebelly loves Wendy Blackish, who admires Zeke for his whiteness. Bagley Brown, the "Wainscott Weasel," is deeply in love and obsessed with Bridget, a silver fish who says that "fish are meant for fish." Most of the major and minor characters are stereotypes-Zeke is the macho chauvinist, and Bagley is the brooding loner. However, Wendy is an independent female who's not afraid to invite a man to a party or ask to lead when they dance. The plot revolves around these romantic interests and Bagley's attempt to save Bridget and the other inhabitants of the pond from the preying osprey. Bagley hatches a plan to move the bird's nest and nearly sacrifices his life carrying it out. He and Bridget meet one last time, and she says she realizes that what's on the inside is more important than the outside. But, she and Bagley cannot be together. Marcellino's soft, pencil illustrations, in both color and black and white, are drawn from exciting perspectives, much like his picture books. The book is handsomely designed with its choice of typeface and layout. Unfortunately, the charming illustrations are not enough to carry this melodramatic story. From Booklist Gr. 4-6, younger for reading aloud. Bagley Brown, Jr., a good-looking weasel (despite an eye patch), is Wainscott Woods' resident eccentric. He has never recovered from his famous father's untimely death, nor his mother's passing shortly thereafter. When he develops a crush on a beautiful bass (fish, that is), he is destined for the heartbreak only unrequited love can bring. But when the fish pond is threatened by drought and an osprey, he proves that blood runs true as he goes to heroic lengths to save his beloved. This well-realized fantasy has everything a reader could want: adventure, humor, and style. Depth is added by a bittersweet conclusion, illustrated with a particularly poignant picture. The art is one of the book's high points, and throughout, the text is enhanced by Marcellino's beautifully rendered color and black-and-white illustrations, which combine with the overall design to make this a handsome piece of bookmaking as well as a good book to read. The story is about the lifeof the weasels. The main characters of the book are Bagley Brown, which is famous for his name because his father built the Double-B which is used for transporting eggs from a farm. After his father made the tunnel he was never seen again because a night owl got him, but only Bagley knew. Zeke is a nice weasel and a good dancer. Wendy is a girl from the north fork. The story is about the many adventures of Bagley. It is a great book with super great illustrations, I am a nine year old boy and I loved this book.

Any person who enjoys books like The Wind in the Willows, Watership Down, Charlotte's Web, and Winnie-the-Pooh will love this humorous and moving story. It concerns Bagley Brown, Jr. He is the son of a famous, brilliant weasel. Bagley has neither lived up to his family name nor lived down his parents death. To further his troubles, he falls in love...with a fish. Eventually, Bagley must try to save his love and live up to his heritage. This is a humorous and adventurous tale that takes you into another world. Any child should enjoy this.

Wendy Blackish has come to Wainscott woods with her uncle and aunt for the season. She soon falls in love with the famous Bagely Brown jr. Zeke White Belly is quickly falls under Wendy's spell, and he has all sorts of admirers. But for Bagely, his heart has been captured, by a fish! But her pond is being dried up and there is another danger. An osprey. Will Bagley let anything bad happen? What will Zeke do about Wendy? What will Wendy do about Zeke? Read it! Tor Seidler + Fred Macellino = Perfection! That's why I recommend this book! And 'A RAT'S TALE' If you are like me, and like good books, than read a this boook!

chapter one

My name is Phineas L. MacGuire. A few people call me Phineas, but most people call me Mac. Yesterday, when I was riding the bus to school, I came up with a bunch of cool things the L in my name could stand for. My list included: 1. Lithosphere (the outmost shell of a rocky planet) 2. Lunar Eclipse 3. Light-Year 4. Labrador Whisperer Unfortunately, the L in my name does not stand for any of those things. It stands for Listerman, which was, like, my mom’s great-aunt Tulip’s last name or something. My mom is very big on family traditions, but even she’s not allowed to call me Listerman. I mean, ever. You can probably tell by the first three things on my list of L names that I am a scientist. In fact, I’m the best fourth-grade scientist at Woodbrook Elementary School. Or at least sort of the best. There’s this girl in my class named Aretha Timmons who might be kind of as good at science as I am, but her goal is not to be the greatest scientist in the whole world one day, which mine is. I think that gives me the edge. The last thing on my list has to do with a certain Labrador retriever named Lemon Drop. I walk Lemon Drop every day after school, and earlier this year I did a major dog slobber experiment inspired by Lemon Drop’s natural dog slobberiness. It was awesome. The fourth grade has been my best year as a scientist ever. So far I have: 1. Gotten an honorable mention in the fourth-grade science fair. 2. Grown my own slime and established the Phineas L. MacGuire Mold Museum in my bedroom. 3. Performed important dog slobber experiments that prove, when you get down to it, slobber is alive. 4. Attended Space Camp and ridden the Mars roller coaster without throwing up. For most people, that would be enough for one year, but when you’re a scientist like me, you want to do scientific stuff all the time. The problem is, sometimes you run out of good ideas. I’ve been in the middle of a serious dry spell that has lasted over two weeks, and I’ve been feeling pretty grumpy about it. Usually I’m in a good mood, so people notice when I’m not. Yesterday my teacher, Mrs. Tuttle, put one of the rubber frogs from the jar she keeps on her desk on top of my head. She was trying to make me laugh. Everybody else laughed, but I didn’t. At lunch my best friend, Ben Robbins, who is a genius artist, drew a bunch of pictures of me as a superhero scientist. There was one where I was wearing a lab coat and holding up an exploding beaker of chemicals. It was really cool-looking, but it didn’t cheer me up. During recess Aretha went out and found three dried worms to give me for my dried worm collection. This should have made me extremely happy, since this hasn’t been a good spring for dried worms, and I’m behind on my monthly quota. And it sort of did make me happy, but only for about ten minutes. Then I went back to feeling grumpy because I didn’t have a good science project to do. My mom has been grumpy a lot lately too. She’s a naturally irritable person, but that’s not the same thing as being grumpy. Being irritated is a reaction to a situation. Being grumpy is a state of mind. “I don’t know why I can’t lose this last five pounds,” she complained at dinner last night. She took another bite of pizza before saying, “Phyllis and I walk two miles every day on our lunch break. You’d think the pounds would just fall off.” My stepdad, Lyle, reached across the table and grabbed a slice from the box. “You look great, Liz. I’m glad you’re exercising, but you don’t need to do it to lose weight.” “We could stop eating pizza all the time,” I said. “That might help.” I should point out that I wasn’t actually eating pizza. Pizza is pretty much my favorite food group, but I’ve learned you can get tired of even stuff you love a lot if you have to eat it three nights a week. So for the second night in a row I was eating a bowl of Cheerios for dinner. My mom’s expression was 50 percent grumpy and 50 percent irritated. “Mac, we’ve been through this. I’m tired when I get home after a long day at work. So’s Lyle. Cooking takes time, and it takes energy, two things I really don’t have a lot of at the end of the day.” I shrugged. “I’m just saying that scientifically speaking, it’s hard to lose weight when all you eat is pizza. I’m not complaining or anything.” “You might be complaining just a little bit, and I guess I don’t blame you,” my mom said, and then she smiled a grumpy sort of smile. “I can’t tell you how often I wished the workday was like a school day—you know, home by three, plenty of time to get everything done. If I got home at three every day, I’d be able to—” She paused. She looked at me for what seemed like a really long time. And then she got this smile on her face. A very scary kind of smile. “I know just what to do about it,” my mom said, picking up her phone and tapping on the keyboard. After she was done, she said, “There! Problem solved!” Lyle and I looked at each other like, What’s going on? My mom lost her grumpy expression. In fact, she looked downright happy. That sort of scared me, if you want to know the truth. “I’ve just texted Sarah that tomorrow when you get home from school, she’s to take you to the grocery store.” By Sarah, she means my babysitter from outer space. Going anywhere with Sarah was not high on my list of things to do. “Why?” I asked. My mom smiled. “Because from now on, you’re going to cook dinner, Mac. And I know you’ll do an amazing job.”

A fun book that includes science, bullies, cooking and friends By Sunshine on a Rainy Day Phineas MacGuire, budding 4th grade scientist, is suddenly given the task of cooking dinner for the family. The problem is--he doesn't know how to cook. Once he learns that cooking is just like chemistry he puts everything in to learning the science of good cooking. Many mishaps happen that get in his way of success, including a bully that wants a daily batch of brownies and unexpected results of his cooking trials. But in the end he does learn a thing or two about cooking as well as makes a new unexpected friend.The illustrations are numerous, enjoyable to look at, humorous and make the story go even faster.This story is a quick read and a lot of fun. Not only did I learn new things about science and cooking, I enjoyed the humor sprinkled throughout. The characters are wonderful and Phineas is extremely likeable. There is a perfect level of the gross out factor for everyone. I have not read the first books in this series, but I look forward to it. This book would be an excellent read aloud for grades 2-4 classrooms as well as a fun book to read for grades 2 and up. It is written on a reading level of 4.9.

This adventure introduces chemistry in a way that is often times overlooked: cooking. So much chemistry was covered that I was able to count this in with my daughter’s homeschooling; a nice break from our physical science text book. Super 4th grade scientist Phineas not only tackles the culinary arts he is forced to confront the much more challenging situation of bulling. An exciting addition in a wonderful series that kids will love.

So if you are fond of reading with your child, this is a winner. And you can reinforce the lesson by giving your youngster a chance to take over the kitchen once in a while. In the long run that pays off really nicely!

About the Author

Ali Redford is an adoptive parent of siblings who has worked in education, theatre and marketing. She has been through a lot of family therapy and, on a good day, seems to be coming out the other side, touch wood.

Kara Simpson is a freelance illustrator and mother of two. They live in the South of England.

By Storywraps A little boy who has been hurt and abused builds a strong wall around himself to stop his pain and feel protected. The wall becomes his shield and fortress where he feels safe and helps him cope with a false sense of security from the outside world.Then one day Someone Kind comes along and bounces a ball against his wall, sings him songs through some of the cracks and paints a beautiful coloured mural on the opposite side which he can't see. Her kind deeds lure him out and her gentle smile and willingness to play and interact with him with love enables him to trust her and even have fun with her in the outside world.This wonderful picture book uses this simple metaphor to help children discover that barriers can be taken down, bridges can be built and trust can be established once again after they have experienced trauma in their lives. Hope can be theirs for the taking.The book will help children more fully understand their feelings and emotions and encourage them to talk about themselves in a safe, protected environment. Highly recommended.

By Grateful Grandma This is a picture book to read with adults to help children understand how to trust others to help them when they have suffered something serious and are afraid to share their feelings with others. It would definitely need to have an adult to help children to understand how to trust like the little boy in the story. By kimberly hall I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.The Boy Who Built A Wall Around Himself by Ali Redford is a powerful story of Boy, only referred to as Boy, who has hid his emotions and true self due to trauma in his past. This leads to conflict with others. Someone Kind begins to work at breaking down the wall by talking to Boy, including him in games, etc. Eventually, Boy is able to overcome his "wall". As stated, the story is powerful and occurs all to often in our society. This book can help show adults and children how kind words, patience, and persistence can help break down barriers. Though I wasn't a fan of the illustrations, I did like how black and white drawings were used in conjunction with full color to show the difference between wall and post wall times. The lack of color adds to the bleakness of the earlier time. I also loved how the characters weren't actually named. I felt that this could help children relate to the character of Boy better than if the character were given a name. I do hope there might be a Girl in the future for an additional book in the series to help female students better relate to the concept of the book.
