Typical Modern Kid's Sci-Fi By Strategos I'm a fan of fantasy and sci-fi for all different age groups so I checked this book out to see what modern sci-fi writing for younger audiences is like these days. While it isn't terrible, there's simply nothing in this book to recommend it over stories for this age group I have read previously. I'm not sure exactly what other reviews mean by "well-written" or what they are comparing it to, but the other book I'm reading for this age group is the recently translated "The Letter For the King" which was originally written in the 1960's I believe. That book is a sweeping epic with gorgeous prose that reminds one of the best of T.H. White and C.S. Lewis. This book...seems very thinly written, with shallow characters, basic vocabulary, and an adventure that isn't particularly gripping (if you want modern sci-fi/adventure with a REALLY gripping story and writing, read Blood Guard).Perhaps to some children this series would be exciting, but the lack of description makes it hard for me to visualize anything happening (the cover art is awesome, but when the writing finally takes you to that location, it isn't nearly as cool as you would think. Even worse, the kiddie thinking makes it hard to believe that the protagonists are actually as smart as they are supposed to be.If your kids have already read the Chronicles of Narnia, have them read The Letter For the King. If they are young teens, have them read Lord Of The Rings, then the Foundation Series. For this age group, I would recommend Heinlein's Juvenile novels such as Have Spacesuit Will Travel, Citizen of the Galaxy, or Tunnel In the Sky. And if you want something more modern and don't mind fantasy, I'd recommend the Redwall series. This isn't a bad book. It just doesn't really educate or open minds to the awesome wonders in the world of writing. I'd only recommend it if other better options have been exhausted or your kids want a break from all the fine writing of the past.

Decent Book, Like that it's a Rapid Fire Series By Bryan Newman Well it took a while to get through this book but just finished it on my commute this morning. I was interested in this series for a couple of reasons, first the premise sounded good and I like to get into series that I know my kids will like. But mostly I was intrigued by the rapid fire plan to get all six books out in a year by using different writers for each installment. I had been considering getting the first book at Target when I got the chance to get an ARC of book 2.While starting on book 2 has some downfalls, I think it does give a good tenor on what the books are about. I definitely feel that book one was an establishing introduction where the characters were introduce, and this book is clearly a transition book to the rest of the series where some major secrets are revealed, and a new set of competitors are introduced that should take the reader through the rest of the series. The main adventure is not super strong. In each book, the crew needs to find a component for a super fuel to save earth. Due to the limitations on space travel technologies, only humans under 14 can travel, adults cannot survive the process. (Isn't that a stretch for a premise for a tween book?) In this installment, they find that they need to recover some magma from a planet that ends up being the creation of one of the characters in the book, and while the peril is a little light, the purpose of this book seems more aimed at developing the main characters of the book and lay the foundation for the rest of the series. The writing is decent, it is not the most compelling tween adventure, but it was definitely readable. There are lots of tie ins with contemporary culture, like references to Taylor Swift and games like Simon. This should be appreciated by kids. Much like 39 Clues, there will be interactive tie ins as well to draw kids deeper into the series. Hopefully it will not be totally heavy handed, but there are ads in the books leading you to look into the online game etc.All in all, it's been a decent book. My kids seem interested in reading it now that I am done and I look forward to seeing how well it gets them engaged.

Four 12 year olds have been chosen to go into space to find the six elements that will when fused comprise the new energy needed. One planet called Meta Prime seems to be the source of one of these elements, and the four young intrepids seem to have their eye on the prize. However, a dark sense seems to entrap them and someone or some bodies are trying to stop their mission. It may be that foreign elements of two sides are trying to get to this wanted elementThis is one of those series that one may need to read from first to last. My grandson and I started on book 2, and I was confused by some aspects of this storyline. My grandson, however, clever as he is, was able to figure out much of the missing story. He tried to fill me in as I read, but it seems I misunderstood what he said. I still had some questions when I finished. This is well written, and my grandson is ten and this is his kind of book. I will need to purchase book one for us to read,to get into the mindset. I understand that a new book will be published every three months, until the sixth book is published. And, to top it all off, there will be a different author for every book. Looking forward to the next book.Recommended. prisrob 09-25-15
