Storm has written a fun and interesting book about farting and its essence, "99 Facts About Farts" (2015).The book is primarily aimed at children and adolescents, but can obviously well be read with interest by adults and older too.Here we find information spanning areas from the "close" and intimate through the social and literary to the ecological and cosmic aspect of Farts. Some information was totally new for me, simply something I possibly had not thought about before: Both thermite, beetles and fish fart !!It is also highly suggestive that a cow emits as much CO2 per day as a private car.The fact that modern agriculture and the weight of the mega industrial meat production in the West is one of the major contributors to global climate change, is evident, but it is a relatively suggestive new piece of information that the amount of co2 gas production by one cow per day is equivalent to a car's daily emissions.Interesting is also J.N. Storm's sweep within our cultural and literary history: Dante as well as Shakespeare have been very concerned with the issue. In Shakespeare's baroque works fart plays an important burlesque performance in many of his plays for the theater.  I think Storm's book is a fun and interesting contribution to an obvious "vital" topic! The book is written with a becoming humorous distance that could excite both young and adults' curiosity. In my opinion the author's choice of topic is rather special, and rarely "aired out" in public in our time! All the more interesting is the book to read, I think. Especially because it provides reflections and associations of all the "unconscious" but "obvious" facts which is closest to ourselves:Firths, often unreflected or still simply unconscious due to our basic cultural stereotypes, prejudices or "unacceptable behavior" and taboo among bourgeoisie's "classical" upbringing.

And when I saw this book at first, I immediately thought of my little cousin who loves humor like this, which is why I opted to review the book. After reading it, I know for sure the book is something he would appreciate.Initially, I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into, but I must say this did give me a chuckle or two.Reading about various people throughout history who made money from farting was probably the most interesting part to me, because it wasn’t something I ever thought of as a “marketable skill” in society.As a person who frequently reads movie trivia, I was fascinated by some of the entertainment industry facts in this book as well.Naturally, as a person who obviously enjoys reading, I loved the facts in this book about books—particularly the Shakespeare information.The fact in this book about getting paid to be a “fart smeller” in China was one I did pass along to the little cousin who I mentioned earlier. He found it humorous, and I told him it could be his new career path when he gets older. I then promised myself to buy him a physical copy of the book sometime in the future.I can see that Storm really did his research into this, and I found myself slightly giggling at the thought of him researching all the information that went into this book. I enjoyed the quick read, and I know that there is a wide market for this book.

There is a great balance of words that he knows, and words that he has to sound out.They are thin paperbacks. So if your child is rough with books, these may not be the best choice. Gail Carriger brings the Finishing School series to a finish with Manners & Mutiny and I must say, things do go out with a bang! Sophronia has had a time of it all while attending Mademoiselle Geraldine's, but a proper lady knows not to complain as such!While I could never really fully get into this series as a whole, I have enjoyed it on some level! I guess, it's just been too long since I read the first book and even binging the remaining books continued to leave me befuddled as to a few things. Then add in the fact that all these events take part before the Parasol Protectorate series and I'm right about lost! LOL. Though I want to say I can dredge up some inklings of the first series Gail wrote and the connection to this one. As we've seen a few characters and then the epilogue here gives even more headway into that series.The year is winding down and as the girls come back after the holidays to reign in the new year with their fellow classmates, quite the disaster occurs and everyone must leave the floating school, everyone except for Sophronia of course! Sophronia is determined to uncover who is attacking the school and basically stop them, using all the skills she's learned as of late.This series is definitely fun and quirky, you could say! Sophronia is a fun heroine and her friends are just as amusing and entertaining! Even as the series wraps itself up we learn a few shocking revelations about them.Then there's that ever present YA love triangle. Truly, it's a love-hate relationship with those. It all depends on the execution of it for it to work for me. This one was a bit muddy. Sophronia has feelings for Soap, the lowly sootie, but who's now a newly made werewolf when she bargained the last time around to save his life. It's not just his race that stands between them in having a public relationship, though sadly, it does factor in when you consider the time in society, but there's still a handful of other things as well. Then there's Felix who claims to care for Sophronia and yet, he betrayed her and her friends last time around as well. He was never able to stand up for himself and leech away from his father. And yet, we learn a thing or two about him.What kind of drove me bonkers was that Sophronia never really seemed to have a choice in mind. She clearly was driven away from Felix after his betrayal, yet I never got that she cared for Soap than more than just a friend. She constantly tells herself she doesn't feel anything for him...I don't know. Maybe it was how I read it, she had no conflicting feelings when she said such things to herself, so I just didn't get that "I love Soap" vibes. Though we already know she does care for him in a sense, he's been her friend since the very beginning after all.The series ends rather well. There was just one character whose fate was left untold...Sophronia goes on in the afterword that tells us pretty much where all her friends left off, except one. And I felt disappointed by that. But what can you do? Otherwise, I felt like things wrapped up nicely. And I feel confident in my assumption, we do see her briefly in the Parasol Protectorate series, as there was mention of her next assignment just towards the end of the book.The Finishing School series was a fun and enjoyable read! I can't wait to read more from Gail Carriger, as it stands I still need to read Prudence and I am so looking forward to that one too!Overall Rating 4/5 stars

So this is in a way a prequel series to the Parasol Protectorate, as timeline wise it is earlier in the same world, just as The Parasol Protectorate is a prequel to the The Custard Protocol series. And if you haven’t read either of those, you can absolutely start with this series even though Parasol Protectorate came out first. Just not with this book. This series needs to be read in order to make sense. But it is a fun, and mannerly steampunk world that I enjoy very much.So since this is the series finale, let me introduce how the series starts:It’s one thing to learn to curtsy properly. It’s quite another to learn to curtsy and throw a knife at the same time. Welcome to Finishing School.Fourteen-year-old Sophronia is a great trial to her poor mother. Sophronia is more interested in dismantling clocks and climbing trees than proper manners–and the family can only hope that company never sees her atrocious curtsy. Mrs. Temminnick is desperate for her daughter to become a proper lady. So she enrolls Sophronia in Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality.But Sophronia soon realizes the school is not quite what her mother might have hoped. At Mademoiselle Geraldine’s, young ladies learn to finish…everything. Certainly, they learn the fine arts of dance, dress, and etiquette, but they also learn to deal out death, diversion, and espionage–in the politest possible ways, of course. There isn’t much I can relate regarding the plot, besides the the aforementioned general description about the genre mashup and the book blurb, without spoiling either this book or previous ones in the series.So I guess I’ll focus on Sophronia, a lady I enjoy tremendously. She’s intrepid, resourceful, and smart. It has been a delight following her adventures in this madcap steam punk world. I can’t say how much I enjoyed this final adventure focusing on her, and her growth, rather than so much on her feelings for boys. Don’t get me wrong, we get a satisfactory happily ever after, but that wasn’t what this book was about.I wish I could find more steam punk or gas lamp stories like these, Meljean Brook‘s, or Cindy Spencer Pape‘s. So I highly recommend this series for lovers of those genres, whether they like new adult fiction or not. I also recommend it for those who enjoy new adult, so long as they don’t strenuously object to steamp punk/gas lamp. And if you are a new adult fan who wants to dip their toes in steam punk, this is probably the place to start. It is also an appropriate selection for teens, there isn’t a thing a parent would object to, that would simply be unmannerly.And as an aside, one of the things that fascinates me is how very much I now want to go back and reread The Parasol Protectorate and look for all the tiny little linkages. That series is completely unneeded for this series, nor is this one needed for P.P., but for people who are interested in both, the little connections are just so fascinating. It is excellent world building in my opinion.

I love this author and can't get enough of her work. I was sad especially to see this heroine be "finished". Ria is one of my favorites, but I guess I say that every time with every one. How can you ask for more from an author than hedgehogs, chatelaines, dirigibles, vampires/werewolves, ladies and gentlemen, and hurlies! She packs the perfect punch every time. This was a fitting finish to our ladies' stories. I enjoyed it thoroughly and had to force myself to take breaks so it wouldn't be over a couple of hours after it was released. It was such a fun read and wonderful to hear more about some of our favorite characters from other series, too. Wonderful, fun, light-hearted romp through the air. Highly recommend this author!

I think we all could use some perspective on our place in the world and this book does just that. It's also educational in it's focus of the water cycle. The art is amazing too!I would recommend this book as a gift for children or an adult who is having some trouble enjoying the ride!

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A beautiful, thorny entry in the world of Nyeusigrube By Phoenix Child As of late, I have not been impressed with Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. This is something that deeply saddens me; when I was younger, the novels of the world of Nyeusigrube (Rhodes' "Den of Shadows") ruled my shelves. When she expanded her world and created the astoundingly beautiful "Kiesha'ra" series dedicated to the warring shapeshifters, I was even more enthralled. It was after those books -- the original four Den of Shadows entries and the five Kiesha'ra -- that things changed. Her characters became more juvenile, the world itself less tightly bound together, and entries in Nyeusigrube became quite uneven; consider the dizzying shifts in perspective in the strange "Persistence of Memory" to the extremely well-written and grounded "Token of Darkness", the beauty in "Shattered Mirror"'s unexpected sequel "All Just Glass" to the extreme mishandling of the brutal Bruja guilds in the profoundly misguided "Poison Tree". The latest entry, "Promises to Keep", was extremely interesting and seemed a real return to form, but to be honest, I approached "Bloodwitch" with serious misgivings.I am thrilled to report that she proved me wrong. "Bloodwitch" is the first entry in a new set within Nyeusigrube, and Rhodes chose an extremely good approach to this world by both starting over fresh with new characters, politics and intrigues but still featuring some of the characters we know and love from her previous work, set within the horrifically beautiful world of Midnight introduced in her excellent "Midnight Predator"."Bloodwitch" follows the story of Vance, a quetzal shapeshifter who lives within a gilded cage in Midnight, the feared vampiric empire whose lifeblood is the trafficking of slaves, human and non-human alike. The reader is invited into Vance's world as the young man's eyes are forced to open past the shelter he's been provided with to the horrifying work that goes into keeping his world spinning, and it's a heartbreaking journey as Vance is as innocent and naive as any child who finally has to learn that his parents are not perfect. There is intrigue, danger, manipulations, lies, twists and turns aplenty, and to be frank, it's an adult take on the worlds that Rhodes has set up, something she seems to have abandoned since ending the "Kiesha'ra" series. The book is admittedly a bit slow at times, but once the finale nears and the body count racks up it ends in a satisfyingly tense note, and the front cover's warning to "fear those kept in cages" offers a chilling glimpse into this projected trilogy's future.**Spoiler Alert: The reasons why I gave this novel four stars rather than five involve spoilers for all of Rhodes' works.**The only thing keeping me from giving this novel a five star is that there is not enough given to world-building. To be completely truthful, the only reason I was able to walk into this world as easily as I was is that I recently re-read the Nyeusigrube bibliography from start to finish. Jaguar plays a minor role in this book, but if you hadn't read "Midnight Predator" he was rather unimportant and his blind slave's inclusion means nothing to you. Also, as another reviewer pointed out, the inclusion (briefly) of the hawk Alasdair was confusing as to quite when this novel took place; that was a big thing to reveal without explaining.Aside from that, it was a much more mature, enjoyable read than some of her recent works, and though it could have done with some more worldbuilding, relying more on familiarity with past works than with drawing in new readers, "Bloodwitch" was extremely interesting and I really do look forward to the book two in the "Maeve'ra" trilogy.

By Heather Sexton I've loved this author since I was young (in middle school) her books are just perfect as I've gotten older I can admit that some of her books don't appeal to me as much but I've still read and own EVERY one of her books. I would recommend all of her books to everyone who can read. Start with In the Forest of the Night. (her first book) and read them in order. it helps with the den of shadows books cuz she revisits old characters but you don't have to read them in order to understand some of the stuff but it helps so you already know the characters. The Kiesha'Ra series is next and is great if you like suspenders all kinds. All her books are great. Again, I think everyone should read them.

By Feelah the tigress Over the past year, real life had crept up on me, and I hadn't even noticed that my favorite author had released a new book until now! I've been a fan of Amelia's since middle school, and although I'm no longer within the target age range for her books (far from), I find that I still enjoy them. After her last book, Promises to Keep, I was feeling rather anxious about how any future sequels would fare (some rather intense changes take place in that book, but I won't spoil it here). However, this book does not take place chronologically after that book, but instead is set in the distant past (in the 1800s). Oh well, so it's not a sequel. Nonetheless, I did enjoy it.The book follows protagonist Vance Ehecatl, a shapeshifter who was raised in luxury and gently cared for, but who is essentially being manipulated by his vampire overlords. Eventually, he must choose where his loyalties lie. I'm not going to give away any more of the plot than that, but suffice it to say, it's a great and interesting new perspective from Ms. Atwater-Rhodes. I've read every single book of hers (plus extra stuff on her website), so I can definitely say that this book offers a new and fresh perspective. Diehard fans of her books will be quite pleased with it.However, this book isn't really for “newcomers” to the series. In fact, in the past I was able to describe certain books of hers as okay starting points for people unfamiliar with her works, but with each passing book, it's become apparent to me that anyone who doesn't already have a background in her world will be awfully confused. This book is no different. I know some might claim that you could jump in right here and be fine, but that's not really the case (and judging by the other reviews where people were obviously confused, I'm quite right about that). That being said, I personally loved this new book, but I'm already very familiar with her world, and many of the characters featured here were introduced previously in other books (and indeed, for the dedicated fan, seeing all those cameos were great!). Many of the characters, though, were fleshed out much better in previous books, and I can imagine that a new reader wouldn't really understand these people without that prior knowledge (in fact, it's helpful to have even read all the supplementary information in the wiki page on her website). A new reader would probably not understand much of anything that happened in this book, and I don't blame them for being confused at all. Still, I did enjoy it.So...do I recommend “Bloodwitch?” Well, if you're already a fan of Ms. Atwater-Rhodes' writing and have read her other books, then yes, it's quite the treat! However, if you are new to her writings, I'd suggest starting with her very first book, “In the Forest of the Night” and just reading them in order of release. I know that reading that many books is a pretty big investment, but you'll know after the first two or three if her writing style is for you or not. I'm already a huge fan and love her work, but not everyone does, so I guess that's up to you. You'll just have to read and find out!
