It offers kids a physical book that they can read together with a parent or older sibling as well as inspires their creative imaginations about ways to do productive things using a computer. It's important to know upfront, however, that you will need to have a tablet or iPad already on hand in order to download the ScratchJr program, which is a free download. And this book also teaches both parents and kids not to jump ahead when learning something new, as fully understanding and following the directions in chapter one is essential to succeeding with the instructions in the following chapters. We applaud The Official ScratchJr. Book for making learning fun -- who know what future computer programmers and designers will be inspired by its pages!

A well-done guidebook By Phil Shapiro [[VIDEOID:49255ada1ac70ef5e4b1e7d4eb34acc4]] This is a well-done guidebook to help parents, siblings, teachers, friends and other family members get up to speed quickly with ScratchJr. As someone who already knows and loves Scratch, I was intrigued to see how the essence of Scratch is retained, while providing a simple interface and fewer options. ScratchJr is by no means limited, though. There's tons of avenues for creative expression and coding still available with ScratchJr.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Get the app, get the book. By Emily M. Enders My 5 - year-old daughter absolutely loves Scratch Junior, and this book has really given us some good tips and fun examples to use in our projects. The book is well-written and engaging, and she has no problem following along. She's able to draw her own characters, record dialog, and move things around to create her own mini movies. Having to sequence the action has really helped with her analytical skills. She is so proud of her work, and it's been fun to see her creations.

84 of 84 people found the following review helpful. Better than the other flash cards brand on amazon By David Amazon offers two brands of flashcards: School Zone (this one) and Brighter Child. It's hard to tell the difference from reading the s, so I bought the Alphabet flashcards from both brands to try them out. Both brands are about the same size and provide 2 flashcards for each letter. I think the School Zone flashcards are better in several respects: * The School Zone cards have 2 different pictures for each letter. E.g., for the letter "A", School Zone has an Apple card and an Ant card. The Brighter Child cards have two identical Apple cards (one has a capital A and one has a lower case a). The different pictures on the School Zone cards allow for a good match-the-letter game. * The School Zone cards have the letter and word written on the back, so the parent knows what is on the other side and older kids can learn to read the words. E.g., the back of the Apple card says "Aa" and "apple" on the back. The Brighter Child cards have a generic design on the back of every card (sort of like a deck of playing cards). * The illustrations on the School Zone Cards are higher quality original artwork and more engaging. The illustrations on the Brighter Child cards have a grainy look, like someone downloaded free clip-art and enlarged them. * The School Zone cards are made in USA. Brighter Child is made in Vietnam. So the School Zone cards have a smaller carbon footprint just from being shipped a shorter distance and probably were made in a more environmentally-responsible manner * And finally, the School Zone cards are cheaper

Could be a little more durable By dewfactor Great pictures, great size, and when they've got a hole punched in the corner (drilled through at Kinko's, threaded through a notebook ring), they make a great travel toy. However, the lamination is a little flimsy, so they're not as durable as I'd like them to be. That being said, the person who uses them (every day!) is under age 2, so he's probably tougher on them than an older pre-reader or new reader would be.

The cards are thin, so if your kid is under 4, these cards will not survive for a long time, but it's cheap. My kid is 2 years old, we learn words in a few languages with these cards, in a few years we'll learn alphabet.

Miley This story makes for a great way to introduce your young oceanographer to all things lobster. Through the inquisitive dialog between a chick and her mother, readers learn about lobsters living in different regions of the world and a good number of facts about the American Lobster. All of the questions your child may have are answered through a mix of science and sentiment in this accessible and fun book. Look forward to reading the next offering in what our family hopes becomes a growing series!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. much like an inquisitive child might do By Amazon Customer Most children's books that have science content are written from the perspective of a person. This book uses the voice of a young lobster to ask questions, much like an inquisitive child might do. The teaching is done through the dialog of the mother lobster and her offspring, the young chick lobster named Lori. Lots of information and vocabulary incorporated into a read aloud children's book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. funny, and sweet By E. Smith A darling story of an inquisitive little lobster and her teacher-mama... educational, funny, and sweet. And penned by a veteran science teacher who has spent a lifetime living on and loving the sea. My children love this book; it a throwback to children's books that educated with rich watercolor, no clutter, and verified educational content. Outstanding.
