3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Farmall Book By Robert K. Mcconkey This is a very good book with perhaps the most complete company history I've seen. Good pictures as well.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good photos, questionable history By Joe B Beautifully designed book, but not a great read. Historical info is not linear, tons of technical engine information is mixed in with dollops of generalized historical facts without very much flow. Overall it gave me a good grasp of the history of the Farmall, but tried too hard to combine specific tractor info with the story of the tractor.

His story opens this book with holiday cheer "all year 'round." Tinsel's job, according to Santa himself, "will be to bring Christmas cheer to the children of the world." He does a marvelous job with his assigned children, such as Timothy whose father had died. A wonderful example -- bringing cheer to boys and girls around the world.CHRISTMAS IN PERU? That's where Maria Luisa lives. But her family is in the USA during the holidays. Tinsel tries to bring her mucho happiness! Next is THE GIFT OF CHRISTMAS, and Tinsel's assignment is to help a little boy named Eddie in Chicago. But Eddie doesn't believe in Christmas--so what can Tinsel do? Ah ha, you'll see!Next it's a visit to Meghan whose parents just got divorced. A tough assignment, but I was warmed by how Tinsel solved that one. Stories like this will show helpfulness and a loving spirit to readers and listeners. But there's more! CHRISTMAS JOKES. A few groaners never hurt the old Christmas spirit. "Q: Why does Santa go down the chimney? A: Because it soots him!" Then other games and puzzles -- just an extra Christmas gift for readers.

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—Fei and her sister, Zhang Jing, live in a mountain village where everyone is deaf and has one of three jobs: artist, miner, or supplier. Fei and Zhang are both artists who paint pictures to illustrate the news of the day. Fei knows that her sister is in trouble when she begins to lose her vision, as she will become a miner if she can't continue to convey the news. In fact, others in the village are also losing their vision. Then, Fei suddenly can hear—but why? Knowing that the answer is out there, Fei and her friend Li Wei set out to get help from a forbidden place in the valley Beiguo. While they are there, they discover the surprising truth about their own village and know what they must do to save its members. Inspired by Chinese folklore, Mead has ventured away from "Vampire Academy" (Penguin) and written a stand-alone fantasy. While the story line is a bit predictable and Fei's ability to suddenly hear doesn't seem overly surprising to her, there is plenty of action and intensity after the duo sets out to find the valley, with a light romance between Fei and Li Wei that will please readers. VERDICT Fans of the author won't want to miss this multicultural, folk tale-based tale.—Karen Alexander, Lake Fenton High School, Linden, MI

Review "Like her heroine, Mead paints with a delicate brush, creating a fablelike story that melds folktale, sacrifice, romance, and the stark realization of humanity's capacity to exploit others for profit."--Publishers Weekly "Mead’s original world building really shines here, as it did in her Vampire Academy and Bloodlines series. Fans of characters like Rose Hathaway and Sydney Sage will flock to thisimpressive stand-alone novel."--Booklist"Reminiscent of Kristen Cashore's novels, this blend of mythology, romance, and suspense will keep readers turning pages."—School Library Connection"A thrilling mix of taut storytelling, majestic Eastern magic and a richly imagined world." --Alison Goodman, New York Times Bestselling author of Eon and Eona"Wholly original--and as every bit as delicately carved as one of Fei's beloved chrysanthemums--Soundless resonates with the sort of love and life that only happens in the hands of a master. That Richelle Mead has perfect pitch shouldn't  surprise anyone--yet this story will surprise everyone." --Margaret Stohl, author of Icons and co-author of the internationally bestselling Beautiful Creatures novels"Mead combines adventure, suspense, and romance in this fast moving cliff hanger mythological fantasy." --Voice of Youth Advocates“Mead weaves Chinese folklore, themes of family, courage, and loyalty, plus her signature romance into her first stand-alone fantasy novel.” –Kirkus Reviews"Fans of the author won’t want to miss this multicultural, folk tale–based tale." --School Library Journal

Even writing YA she is fun for adults. This is nothing like her other works and lacks the wink, snark and overall cheer that the rest of her books have. This is a very simplistic, straightforward romance told in first person. It has no layers or any level of sophistication. The advanced copy I have recommends this for grades 7 and up. In my opinion, this is really for much younger children, maybe age 7-10. There is no nuance here. The plot involves a community of deaf villagers held hostage for food by a barter system they do not control. Fei and Li Wei venture out and find much about the world that is unknown to their people. There are some fantasy elements. Some people get their hearing back as well as restoration of health. The deaf culture aspects are a bit simplistic and preachy. Restoration of hearing as a goal is a hugely controversial topic in the Deaf world so that poked me somewhat. As an interpreter for over 30 years, I felt the use of deafness as a device was well intended but clunky.I didn't enjoy this much and hope Mead returns to her other series work. The book is a very quick read but I just couldn't seem to find much to enjoy in the flat, naive style of this book. I can't recommend it.

19 of 22 people found the following review helpful. The Sound of Something More By Leah SOUNDLESS was one of those books I could not ignore. With a scant amount of YA novels featuring non-Caucasian characters and fantasy settings not modeled after Medieval Europe, I was really happy that Richelle Mead, author of the popular VAMPIRE ACADEMY series, had crafted this book. And I'm part Chinese, so I was very excited to see the Chinese culture represented in YA lit. Sign me up for SOUNDLESS!The premise was interesting. I had no idea where Ms. Mead would go with a village, cut off from the rest of the world because of its location at the top of a mountain, whose entire population has also lost their hearing, would go. Then Fei, a teenaged girl training to be a archivist, suddenly regains her hearing. Where are we going with this? This question is what kept me reading frantically.Ms. Mead's writing flowed smoothly; some passages felt like they were written like a poem. I could picture the boulders of the mountain, the scent of trees, the overpowering presence of the people. The pacing was great for the first two thirds of the novel. The dialogue is all through sign language, which was great. Again, I was on pins and needles wondering where the novel was going. When the reveal of what has happened in to Fei and her village is revealed, it was so wonderfully unexpected. There was real tension between those that can hear and those who can't. Fei comes into her own. I was on cloud 9.However, the last third of the book changed tone and felt rushed. It seemed like there was going to be more, but the end had to happen. The huge letdown is the ex Machina element which comes in the last chapter, which makes for a neat and tidy ending. Some questions are left unanswered, which I liked, but for the most part, it was still a Happily Ever After that without a lot of merit. Drat!I am still happy I read this and got the opportunity to read it, and I hope many people read it for the diverse storyline.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Different but very interesting storyline By Barb Soundless by Richelle Mead is a fantasy novel using Chinese folklore as the theme. Soundless was a very different type of story by Richelle Mead, and though this was sort of a dystopian story, it was totally different using the chinese folklore theme.Fei, our heroine, is a young girl who lives in a mining village high up in the mountains, with no way to leave. All the residents are deaf, as they use sign language to talk to one another. No one knows why they cannot hear, since this has been the way of life going way back. The miners in the village must work hard to pull precious metal from the mines, in order to ship them via a line down the mountain in exchange for food for them all. Slowly, some of the miners are going blind, causing fewer metals to be pulled, and thereby less food to feed them.Fei is an artist, one of the few chosen ones, who have the daily job of recording history through their paintings. Fei’s sister, Zhang is also an artist, but she has begun to hide the fact they she is slowly losing her sight. One night Fei has a dream, and wakes up with different vibrations. She begins to realize that she is beginning to hear things. She is afraid to tell anyone, and doesn’t know why this has happened. Fei spends the next few days listening to different sounds, and it was nice to watch her try to understand what the sounds are.Li Wei, our hero, is one of the miners in the village, who has become disgruntled at the poor conditions. Li who sees his father die from all those years in the mine, begins to protest the conditions. Li many years ago helped save Fei from a fall, and she has always had a crush on him. But they are like night and day, as he is determined to fight this kind of life, and she is content to do what she is expected to do. Once Fei’s sister’s impending blindness is discovered, and Zhang is demoted to a servant, she will go to Li and agree to help him. What follows is a very interesting story, as Li and Fei sneak out together and make their dangerous attempt to go down the mountain (via ropes) and try to ask for help. What they find isn’t what they expect. There are so many different aspects of the story, including the budding romance between Li and Fei. Whatever the discoveries they find, and there are many, some horrific, Fei will stop at nothing to go back to save her sister. The wild ending was exciting, especially with the added fantasy element. To tell too much more would be spoilers.Soundless was a different but excellent storyline, which I thought started somewhat slow, though any world-building is normally that way. However, the last 1/3 of the book was very well done. If you are looking for a pulsating action packed adventure, you will not find that in this book. In the early part of the book, I did find myself losing a little interest, but thankfully I kept going and in the end, I did enjoy the story, and found the entire concept very interesting. Richelle Mead did a fantastic job writing this story and making it believable to us.

By Robert Stock A delightful story about a delightful girl. Phil Rosenberg has written a wonderful book about how youngsters grow spiritually through love of family and friends and find their passions through exploration of the world around them. Rosenberg uses his own love of astronomy as the focal point around which young Evie discovers a world (a universe, really) so far way, yet made to seem so close though the magic of modern technology . In the process, Evie discovers much about herself and the world she lives in. This is an excellent first "chapter" book for second graders yet is challenging enough for third-through sixth graders as well. While it's a fun read, the heartfelt story imparts vital life lessons that we all want our children to learn.

Blue Bottle Mystery - The Graphic Novel: An Asperger Adventure (Asperger Adventures), by Kathy Hoopmann

Review Blue Bottle Mystery is not just a solid exercise in taking an already successful work and re-imagining it for a new readership but also an object lesson in how to adapt material in a way that makes full use of the exclusive storytelling potential of the comics form. We need to see far more graphic medicine aimed at a younger readership like this that never patronises its target audience but informs and elucidates through the remarkable communicative power of sequential art. Broken Frontier This is a book that offers an explanation of aspects of Asperger's Syndrome in a fun way making it accessible to a wide range of readers, especially those (on the spectrum or not) who have a particular passion for visuals... All in all this is a perceptive, optimistic story that artfully weaves information relating to the condition throughout. It should find a place on the classroom shelves of all primary schools and in lower secondary libraries: those who read it will one hopes come away with a greater understanding of what it is to be 'an aspie'. Let's hear it for individuality and difference, and the way such characteristics can enrich the lives of us all. Red Reading Hub It's short and sweet, pretty fun on its own merits, but even better because it teaches about a group of kids on the autism spectrum who are often misunderstood. Rating: Pretty Darn Good. Newbery and Beyond If you're looking for a short, yet intriguing read - either for yourself or for kids and younger siblings - I would definitely recommend this. Books Biscuits and Tea I found this graphic novel both an absorbing story and an excellent way to try to better understand people with Asperger syndrome... I like the information boxes that are interspersed with the dialogues to help the reader understand situations from the point of view of someone with Asperger syndrome. Juno Magazine

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Informative, Entertaining, and Inspirational By Pop Bop This is a new graphic novel treatment of the author's original novel of the same name, which was published to rave reviews in 2001. It is a very successful translation/reinterpretation into graphic form and should expand the book's appeal and accessibility. We are fourteen years later, and it is probably fair to suggest that Asperger's is now much more widely recognized and understood than it was in 2001. That said, there is always room for better understanding and for appreciation of the special challenges faced by those on the Asperger spectrum. So how is this as a reading experience? Well, first off it isn't really a mystery, as such. POSSIBLE VERY MILD SPOILERS. Our hero Ben and his friend Andy find a blue bottle that might or might not contain a magic genie. They make wishes that might or might not be being granted by said genie. They were very careless about wishing when they first opened the bottle so the running mystery is about them trying to remember what they wished for. Consequently, what you really have is a mild sort of fantasy that really works mostly to provide a framework for the story and to provide for surprising things to happen that require Ben to react and cope. That's fine by me because the focus here is Ben and his everyday life, not some complicated plot.We see Ben at school, interacting with other kids, relating to his Dad and Grandmom, dealing with a cranky teacher, and so on. Friend Andy is supportive up to a point. Dad is a little exasperated and clueless at the outset. Grandmom is more supportive, but unaware of Asperger Syndrome. Nowadays I would expect teachers to be alert to Asperger's, so the teacher's cluelessness seems odd, but the teacher does serve as a standin for all of the adult authority figures a kid would encounter even now and so remains a valid character. The deeper success here is that Ben learns about Asperger Syndrome, his Dad and Grandmom learn in a bit more detail about Asperger's, friend Andy learns a bit about Asperger's, and so we have a lot of teaching going on for different folks at different levels. I suspect that's why the novel was so well received at so many levels when it first came out. There's something for everyone regardless of where they fit in an Asperger's kid's life. The overall tone of the book is calm, supportive, and positive. It doesn't shy away from the pain, anger and confusion that Ben can feel in some situations, and it doesn't end all happy-peppy. It is earnest, but not heavy. It doesn't read like a lecture or a polemic, but aims rather to be informative and entertaining, and perhaps inspirational. This is tricky stuff and, happily, the author pulls it off pretty well. Certainly, I was happy to have had a chance to read this admirable effort.(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

I thought this book would be a great addition to our library By Amazon Customer As a librarian for a school for children with Aspergers and Autism, I thought this book would be a great addition to our library. It is with one small problem...the teacher in the book says the word, "hell" and then a student repeats it. We have a zero tolerance policy on vulgarity and unfortunately, my students have keyed in on that one small word. I have removed the book from my shelf and am trying to figure out if I should just sharpie over it or try and white it out and write "heck" or "hey" in there instead. It wasn't necessary for the context of the story and I would hope the author would realize that many ASD children have a strict need to adhere to rules and obsess about little things.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great for kids, adults, and baby faced man children, such as myself! By Kindle Customer I believe that no matter what the age, great books shine through as great books. In the same way that Pixar movies are magical for all, great children's books should also convey a sense of wonder, magic, and storytelling for child and parent alike. The Denim Jungle does exactly this. It not only brings the adult reader down to the kids perspective of literal and imaginative reality, but also heightens the child's sense of imagination of a much bigger world than themselves, but yet one that is relateable.Basically I love this book as much as any kid and ranks up there with some of my favorites, like The Cat in the Hat, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom or Three Questions.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great story! By Aaron L. Great kids' books make dads get so choked-up they have to hide the fact that they're getting choked up over a kid's book. I could probably go into what this means on some weird dad/male emotional-thing but I'll save you the hassle. Either way, this is one of those books. As a parent you realize there's much more going on here and it brings out 'the feels' whereas the kid just digs it. It's the proverbial 1-2 punch of the parent-child reading experience. This one goes in "the good pile".

By Maurit Beeri Night Whispers is definitely one of the greatest Warriors books yet.It is also the scariest one yet.*SPOILER ALERt*The growing drama of the schemes of the dark forest combined with the increasing tension between Ivypaw and Dovepaw as Dovepaw finally discovers that Ivypaw has been trained by Dark Forest warriors and the hatred between ThunderClan and ShadowClan after the battle which claimed the life of the ShadowClan deputy and one of Firestar's lives.I especially liked that Erin Hunter finally tells the story from another Clan's point of view: Flametail, the ShadowClan medicine-cat apprentice. Also, we see the beginning of the first relationship inside the clan since Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight. Lionclaw and Cinderheart (a happy continuation for the reincarnation of the former medicine cat Cinderpelt). And, a returning pattern, Dovepaw meets a cat from a different clan and... If you read the previous books you know how it is.Overall it is a great book which I thoroughly enjoyed.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Warriors book series is back in action!! By Ryan456 Night Whispers by Erin Hunter is the 3rd book in the Omen of the Stars subseries, and the 24th book in the Warriors series overall, and I am very happy to report, this book is getting back to the heart of the Warriors series. I have been following and reading each Warriors book since the 1st came out years ago. The first two series were amazing, while the 3rd was quite lacking,so i was quite skeptical when Omen of the Stars was released. i was falling out of love with the cats. Thankfully,Omen of the Stars Book 1 surprised me and was better than any in the Power of Three. Then the second came, also better than any in power of three. So i was cautiosly optimisitc about Night Whispers. After reading it,I can now say Warriors is back! The book wastes no time in starting off with high intensity drama. Ending moments after Fading Echoes, tensions are high between the clans. Specifically ShadowClan and ThunderClan. The 3 young cats,Lionblaze,Jayfeather, and Dovepaw of Thunderclan seek to find out more about their strange destiny in a prophecy told years ago to Firestar, leader of Thunderclan. One thing I greatly enjoyed about Night Whispers,is the fact that stuff is actually starting to happen. The 3 cats destinys are beginning to be shown and given hints about. I am already formulating theories about what will happen and for once in a book series,i have literally no clue what will happen. i am very excited to see what will happen. There are many ominous signs of destruction being presented to all 4 clans as the Dark Forest warriors(cats who betrayed their clans that died)start preparing for battle. It's next to impossible to put this book down with all the thoughts that fly through your head about what might happen. The past 8 books were vague and never really revealed ANYTHING about the prophecy, but this book starts to throw hints at us. ANother thing i enjoyed was something most fans,me included, have been wanting. A cat's perspective outside of Thunderclan(besides Stormfur and Feathertail in series 2). The cat is ShadowClan's medicine cat,Flametail who i came to think was a great character. It was nice to see for once what cats out of Thunderclan thought about them. Flametail has a hard journey and I will not spoil anything but this adventure is exicting to say the least. The scenes are still vivid and detailed, the action is fast and brutal, and the characters are likeable and realistic(or s realistic as talking cats can be). I eagerly look foward to Book 4 of Omens of the Stars. Night Whispers showed how much punch the Warriors series can still pack

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Warriors Omen of the Stars #3 Night Whispers By CatPaws Never mind if you are an adult, if you are a cat lover this book - and every other one in the Warriors Series - is for you. The plot is wonderful and the cats are so real that you can look at your own cats and find a clan member who fits each and everyone. Maybe the thing I love best is the added insight into my cats. It is impossible to put the book down and too long a wait for the next book in the series. As you read, you come to know the cats and they all become very real, you are there with them and cheering them on. You cry if one of them dies, worry over newborn kits, share the highjinks of the 'paws' and send prayers with the warriors.
