DESOLATE UPON THE ROAD, LOREN MUST FEND FOR HERSELF
The saga of the Nightblade continues across the nine kingdoms. Loren is listless in the wind. Though the Shades have been revealed, the cost of that knowledge seems too heavy to bear. And once again Xain is clutched by the tremors of magestone sickness, giving her the excuse she needs to simply...not go on. But now that the Shades have been found, they will not let Loren rest. If the Mystics learn what she knows, all the Shades' dark schemes could be thrown into disarray. Northwood will be the first town to burn under their icy fury, but as they hunt for Loren on the road to Feldemar, it will not be the last. "People should check out Garrett, he is an excellent vlogger and writer." — Hank Green "An intriguing tale, well presented [with] some intense encounters, graphically described." — R. A bold new start By Jessamine Haak As the first book in a new series following after the original Nightblade trilogy, Shadeborn is a triumph of transitioning a story formerly focussed almost to exclusion of all others on a small group of companions into a narrative that quite literally guides the fates of millions. The main character, Loren, is forced to grow up, being tested in ways she had not been previously, finding responsibility suddenly in her lap, and the journey is both so realistic you can feel her frustration, and expertly woven.I'm hesitant to say anymore mainly because I don't want to spoil anything. But the reach and scope of the story is expanded magnitudes beyond what it was in the original trilogy, creating a huge fantasy world like those of the old fantasy authors, but that does not in its sudden enormity feel too large to care about. If you have read and liked the Nightblade trilogy, you will LOVE its continuation, and if not, consider how great is your joy for well-crafted fantasy.

If I could, I would give this 3 1/2 stars for the improvement. The writing is tighter and more sections clip along at a good pace. But the momentum still sags in the middle, there's a penchant for info-dumping, and I still don't understand many of the characters' choices and motivations--specifics of which I won't discuss here because spoilers. But! I am made optimistic by the upward trend in quality, and I encourage readers to watch Mr. Robinson as he embarks on his new journey with the team at Sterling&Stone.P.S. I'm a sucker for female royalty, and High King Enalyn is no exception.
4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Wow By Saulkin This book is an great addition and fits well into the continuation of the original nightblade epic. As with all the books in this series there is no confusion going between the books. No timeline gaps where you have to ask what the characters were doing since your last adventure with them. Garrett picks up the story mere days from where he left off. I had to pace myself with this book because I found I had read half of it without realizing the time had gone by. In this next part of Loren's travels she is haunted by loss and personal darkness but she must find the strength and light within herself if she is to complete the task ahead of her and with reservation take on the role of leader that she never considered herself to be.I have to keep myself quiet now. But in my opinion this story and world is growing in a way that I haven't experienced since reading the Dragon Lance books. I recommend this book to anyone longing for the epic adventure of a world that literature has been missing in recent years.
