Samantha Penning is much like any eleven year-old, with one exception: she has a secret job. It sometimes requires her to sneak out at night and venture into the dark woods behind her house. That’s her favorite part of being a Protectling. The Woodlanders rely on her to keep them safe, in every season. Sam is certain in her devotion to them and can’t imagine summer without their Lantern Lighting or fall without the Butternut Harvest. But things are changing, and her life away from the woods is expanding and filling up with other responsibilities. As spring awakens the woods after a long winter, the time has come for Sam to face the one thing she cannot change. **Ages 10 and up.

A gentle story with a profound and poignant message By LeahC The Protectlings is a lovely story about connecting with the natural world, caring for others, and growing up. Heilman has created a beautiful backdrop for her tale, filled with scenes of childhood - playing with friends, being part of a loving family, going to camp, going to school. The Woodlanders and their world make the book magical, and black-and-white illustrations add the charm. This is a gentle story with a profound and poignant message, one that will delight both children and adults.

Ms. Heilman's deep connection to nature, particularly to the woods, is made visible in her beautifully realized oil painting on the books cover. Golden light streams through the trees at woods edge. This tale contains many layers, and keeps the reader turning pages on a ride through cliff hangers, business duplicity, midnight adventures, near calamities, sadness, awakenings and joy. Beautifully crafted phrases help children visualize beauty and mood. Early nursery tales sometimes deleted these elements, stripping them of flavor and reality, thus protecting the kiddies from exciting literature. Ms. Heilman gives the excitement back.At the heart of it all, The Protectlings illuminates the values, loves, connections, and transformations that form the core of a real life. Woven through it are the fantasies that fuel flights of imagination.Perhaps the book harbors a secret......that it is a tale for grownups disguised as a story for children. Here, adults can recall a faded childhood, when the world was new and whole and good, where tiny creatures certainly danced in the woods, and magic was possible.Ms. Heilman's illustrations in the text are evocative and sensitive. I hope that in her next book, we will see more numerous renderings with a larger format for each one.

I believe the "and up" segment definitely should read this. This is the story of one young girl, Samantha Penning, her family, and her friends from the woods, the Woodlanders - little people that she acts as a protector for. The author, Carolyn Heilman, does a superb job in taking the reader back to when they were age 11, finding the smallest detail to bring the story home (dividing setting the table up into kids jobs and older sibling helping younger, or telling stories to her little brother, making him and his stuffed animal the central characters). But it's the coming of age aspect that really sticks with me - that point where people lose the childhood innocence we have as we become more responsible adults. The Woodlanders call them Dumans - when their "character shifted from human beings to human doings." Samantha is reaching the age where she will have more responsibilities and less time to spend with her Woodlander friends. The changes weigh on her mind, but her devotion to the Woodlanders is boundless. The art work, also done by Ms. Heilman, is wonderful - she's multi-talented, and I am looking forward to the follow-up to this story, "The Protectlings - On the Common."
