Samantha Penning is much like any eleven year-old, with one exception: she has a secret job. It sometimes requires her to sneak out at night and venture into the dark woods behind her house. That’s her favorite part of being a Protectling. The Woodlanders rely on her to keep them safe, in every season. Sam is certain in her devotion to them and can’t imagine summer without their Lantern Lighting or fall without the Butternut Harvest. But things are changing, and her life away from the woods is expanding and filling up with other responsibilities. As spring awakens the woods after a long winter, the time has come for Sam to face the one thing she cannot change. **Ages 10 and up.

A gentle story with a profound and poignant message By LeahC The Protectlings is a lovely story about connecting with the natural world, caring for others, and growing up. Heilman has created a beautiful backdrop for her tale, filled with scenes of childhood - playing with friends, being part of a loving family, going to camp, going to school. The Woodlanders and their world make the book magical, and black-and-white illustrations add the charm. This is a gentle story with a profound and poignant message, one that will delight both children and adults.

Ms. Heilman's deep connection to nature, particularly to the woods, is made visible in her beautifully realized oil painting on the books cover. Golden light streams through the trees at woods edge. This tale contains many layers, and keeps the reader turning pages on a ride through cliff hangers, business duplicity, midnight adventures, near calamities, sadness, awakenings and joy. Beautifully crafted phrases help children visualize beauty and mood. Early nursery tales sometimes deleted these elements, stripping them of flavor and reality, thus protecting the kiddies from exciting literature. Ms. Heilman gives the excitement back.At the heart of it all, The Protectlings illuminates the values, loves, connections, and transformations that form the core of a real life. Woven through it are the fantasies that fuel flights of imagination.Perhaps the book harbors a secret......that it is a tale for grownups disguised as a story for children. Here, adults can recall a faded childhood, when the world was new and whole and good, where tiny creatures certainly danced in the woods, and magic was possible.Ms. Heilman's illustrations in the text are evocative and sensitive. I hope that in her next book, we will see more numerous renderings with a larger format for each one.

I believe the "and up" segment definitely should read this. This is the story of one young girl, Samantha Penning, her family, and her friends from the woods, the Woodlanders - little people that she acts as a protector for. The author, Carolyn Heilman, does a superb job in taking the reader back to when they were age 11, finding the smallest detail to bring the story home (dividing setting the table up into kids jobs and older sibling helping younger, or telling stories to her little brother, making him and his stuffed animal the central characters). But it's the coming of age aspect that really sticks with me - that point where people lose the childhood innocence we have as we become more responsible adults. The Woodlanders call them Dumans - when their "character shifted from human beings to human doings." Samantha is reaching the age where she will have more responsibilities and less time to spend with her Woodlander friends. The changes weigh on her mind, but her devotion to the Woodlanders is boundless. The art work, also done by Ms. Heilman, is wonderful - she's multi-talented, and I am looking forward to the follow-up to this story, "The Protectlings - On the Common."

SALE!

This spelling journal was created to be loved by creative and inquisitive children.

This spelling method is best for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade, but with mom's help it can be used for children as young as five years old. There are 180 activity pages so that you can use one page per day during the school year. This book can be used for children of all ages with reading problems, poor spelling, ADHD and Dyslexia. It is the perfect first spelling book. The method used is a unique approach for teaching visual thinkers who are artistic and intelligent, but may not be doing well with phonics and memorization. This book uses very creative ways of teaching children how to become naturally good spellers.

Do not worry about correcting your child's work until they get to the part of the book where they are writing their own short stories.

By reading their short stories you can identify all the words that the child has trouble spelling. You can teach them those words by having them write each one down seven times in different colors. Do not make any marks or corrections on the child's book, this is his or her spelling journal, and should not be damaged by grades, or marks. Celebrate everything your child shows you in this journal, and remember learning to spell is like learning to talk. Your child will have some very "cute" ways of spelling in the beginning, and all you have to do is play the COLOR GAME with those words, once the child finishes this journal. As the child works through the journal they may start by spelling some things very "creatively" don't worry! When you read their stories at the end of the book you will see that many spelling problems have "self corrected" because of all the spelling games and activities in this book. Spelling can be fun! The Color Game: There is no need to give a child random spelling lists. Just find out what words the child misspells and have them write their word 7 times on the Fun Page. Use a different color each time.

My 9 year old that struggles with reading , writing, and spelling loves this book. She is learning so much. I like the progression in the book . It has the child coloring , reading , searching the house for words so they start seeing words around them and noticing the spelling and expands their vocabulary by having the child describe a picture. This book really taps into the child's senses. On the pages Bake & spell the student can read the poem, color and copy words. When the child is done those pages. Go to the kitchen and bake a cake then of course eat it. So many options . Love it!

The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, by Howard Pyle

Review “[Pyle’s work] struck me dumb with admiration.”—Vincent van Gogh, in a letter to his brother

From the Publisher 8 1.5-hour cassettes

About the Author Howard Pyle was a successful American author and illustrator, many of whose books are aimed at younger readers. After only a few formal lessons in artistic techniques, Pyle initially began his career creating illustrations for magazines, finally publishing his first work in Harper s Weekly at the age of twenty-five. Pyle s career took off, and he was soon creating his own stories and publishing illustrated books for children. His most famous work is The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, which was the first cohesive retelling of the medieval legend of Robin Hood. His other famous works include Men of Iron, a tale about knighthood, and a four-volume collection about King Arthur. Howard Pyle died in Florence in 1911 at the age of fifty-eight.

(Referring to Kindle edition).Howard Pyle was the first person in the modern era to collect all the Robin Hood ballads that had come down from the midieval era and put them into a modern format, structured as stories and so forth. Essentially every version of Robin Hood in the past century has drawn on Howard Pyle's Robin Hood as its major source, and reading this book is the best way to understand why the minor characters in (for example) Kevin Costner's "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves" are named things like "Will Scarlet" or "Much the Miller's Son."I was given this book to read as a child, and it was and still is one of my all-time favorites (although I always avoided reading the final chapter, which Pyle even warns his readers they may want to do). The elevated, pseudo-elizabethan style even helped me later on -- when I got to Shakespeare in school, the language was easy for me, because I'd been reading Howard Pyle since I was eight. The problem with this ebook version is that it doesn't contain the illustrations, though. And that's simply unforgivable. Howard Pyle is today better known as an illustrator than as a writer. He was the art teacher who taught people like Arthur Rackham and N.C. Wyeth. His illustrations are immensely rich and detailed, and as full of period accuracy and background research as his writing was. It's an unforgivable shame to miss them.Versions of this book can be found online free with illustrations. Don't bother with this version, as it doesn't have them. Reading this book without the illustrations is like taking an oscar-winning film and just listening to the sound with the screen blacked out. You can do it, but why?EDIT: There are now many Kindle versions of this book, all cross-linked so they share reviews. Currently at least, none of the free versions have illustrations; the 99-cent version marked "illustrated" does appear to have most of them, but severely cropped, without many of Pyle's marginalia and scrollwork.

This is a legend, folklore, not fairy tale. It's closer to Beowulf than Beauty and the Beast. The language is fantastic, poetry! I read it first when I was very young, fourth grade maybe, but I enjoyed it then as much as I enjoy it now. The language is an obstacle for the first two pages, maybe three, but, after you acclimatize yourself to it, it creates a unique mood and atmosphere. This book is one of my all time favorites. I laughed, I cried, I wrote a review.

By Godly Gadfly Who hasn't heard of Robin Hood and his merry band of outlaws in Sherwood Forest? In this book you meet them all - including the powerful Little John, courageous Will Scarlet, musical Allan a Dale, and sly Friar Tuck. Howard Pyle offers what is probably the most complete and best collection of Robin Hood tales. All the old favorites are included - Little John and his quarter-staff toppling Robin into the water, Robin winning the golden arrow at Nottingham's archery contest, and the Sheriff being outsmarted in numerous attempts to capture Robin. But these are just the tip of the iceberg - this book is chock-full of entertaining merry adventures. The medieval setting is portrayed beautifully, including the vast gulf between the upper and lower classes of society, the corruption and greed of the nobility, and the hypocrisy of the medieval Roman Catholic church where religion has degenerated to mere outward rituals. Even the language is somewhat antiquated, which initially seems tedious, but persevere because you will soon find that this an enjoyable and essential addition that heightens the heroic atmosphere of the story. But the medieval setting is not presented without a social commentary - Pyle shows that the unbalanced social structure inevitably resulted in the oppression of the poor and weak. It is left to Robin Hood and his men to take justice into their own hands, and fight nobly for the cause of the downtrodden. Such justice is accomplished in a questionable manner, because the notion of robbing the rich to help the poor implicitly endorses civil disobedience. But the more important theme of seeking justice and maintaining truth and right is in itself a noble one. With Robin Hood, we find ourselves wanting justice, and being prepared to make unselfish sacrifices in order to achieve it. When justice is done, it is actually the greed and corruption of the nobility that has led to its own destruction and ruin. But the real attraction of this gem are the enthralling exploits of Robin Hood and his band of merry men. Howard Pyle presents Sherwood Forest as a rather glamorous utopian world where feasting and song abound, where it is never winter, and where the ale rarely runs dry. Robin Hood clearly represents a form of hedonism, and in his company there is never a lack of action, adventure, or for that matter - ale. But it's not the beer that attracts us to Robin Hood, it's rather his bravado. There is no end to the accomplishments of muscles and mind, as he and his merry band outwit all comers by sheer physical skill in archery, wrestling, swordmanship, and quarter-staff combat, or by outsmarting them with deceit and disguise. To our delight, Robin's brawn and brains always come out on top at the end.Howard Pyle's collection of Robin Hood's merry adventures is a classic that is constantly entertaining and exciting - one that you'll want to own and read over and over!

When faced with a threat to his environment in the form of pollution, his desire to help literally propels him into action. The message for kids is not only about how pollution affects our world (there are great facts and resources for learning more about this at the end of the book), but also about how amazing things can happen when you get out of your comfort zone and start working towards a better world. The illustrations are dramatic and fun, and add some subtle humor to the story. It's also a rhyming book which will aid in the development of phonics awareness. I highly recommend this book - you won't be disappointed!

This book also provides a strong message to help raise children's awareness of the troubles pollution creates for the creatures in our oceans. The message in this story is age-appropriate and presented in such a way to inspire children to act-there are even suggestions at the end that every one of us (child or adult) could incorporate into our daily lives to easily help cut down on plastic/waste. I highly recommend this book!

Bjorkman I got this on Monday evening and read it to my girls (ages 5 and 3). They actually sat quietly to listen (a rare occurrence), then they have asked to read it again each of the three nights since. As the other reviewer said, it's a cute story with a good message. There's some cleverness hidden in there that makes it enjoyable for adults as well. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

My daughter is always going on and on about how much she likes them and I can understand why now that I have read one what the appeal to this series is.This is a neat little mystery book about a group of mice friends that go on a vacation to the Bahamas to help with a Wildlife Center. They are meant to assist in research and helping with animals that are in need of help. They are under the care of a Professor named Professor Kendal. When they first get there they help to rescue and rehabilitate a flamingo that got hurt.Later on they talk about doing a re-enactment of when a famous pirate had come to the island and mousenapped and important individual. The story says that the pirate came back to the island but was lost at sea and so was the treasure they had stolen. It turns out the the group of friend’s they call themselves the Thea Sisters had figured out a way to locate and find the treasure and with the help of some of the other’s at the Wildlife Center they go on an adventure to see if they are right and can in fact find the missing treasure. They come up with this idea that if they do find it they will use it the save the Wildlife Center since it is endanger of being shut down due to lack of funds. To find out what happens you will need to read the book. This was a very short and fast read for me. They way the words are on the pages is different and very appealing. It helps to make it more fun to read in my opinion. I do think that any child that likes a bit of mystery will find these books engaging and I look forward to reading more books in the series in the future.
