  • About ‘Romeo and Juliet' by William Shakespeare

The play Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers. Romeo and Juliet is sometimes considered to have no unifying theme, save that of young love.Romeo and Juliet have become emblematic of young lovers and doomed love.

From School Library Journal Grade 5-8-Skillfully read by Claire Higgins, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet will hold listeners spellbound as they become involved in the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues and in Romeo and Juliet's plight of love. Higgins' reading is very natural, and her voice is exceedingly pleasant to listen to. The cassette includes a plot summary, an introduction to Shakespeare by Leon Garfield, as well as supplementary information about Shakespeare and his writings by Dr. Rex Gibson, all read by Simon Russell Beale. This additional information is very worthwhile and will increase the listener's understanding of Shakespeare and why he continues to be important in literature. Peter Hutchins arranged the period background music. The technical qualities are excellent, and the teaching objectives are met. This program is appropriate for individual or group listening, and the additional information will provide an excellent springboard for discussion. A superior acquisition for both public and school libraries with audio collections.Kathy Dummer, Newcastle Middle School, WY Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal This production of Romeo and Juliet featuring Kenneth Branagh and Sir John Gielgud is a superb contribution to the field of classics on cassette. The stunning performance by the Renaissance Theatre Company captures all the color and emotion of Shakespeare's eloquent tragedy of young love. With Samantha Bond as Juliet, Derek Jacobi as Mercutio, and Judi Dench as Nurse, the play, which is set in 16th-century Verona, contains some of the most passionate dialog ever written. An excellent musical score by Patrick Doyle accompanies the actors, as well as a full array of authentic sound effects. The pounding of hooves, the chiming of church bells, and the clashing of angry swords enrich this outstanding listening experience. A 24-page booklet complete with sketches and photos of the actors, a synopsis of the play, and background information is included in the package. Highly recommended for most libraries.Gretchen Browne, Rockville Centre P.L., N.Y.Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

We first started to read some other books with the Old English type writing and I got a C- in this class because I couldnt understand it. We just started reading Romeo and Juliet and I had the same problem so I bought this book. Boy, did it help me! I got an A in my class! Another feature which I liked was how the layout is put side-by-side so if you have to read during class, you'll be able to know where everyone is and if you dont understand it, just go to the other side.

No Fear is the best Shakespeare Ever By Newbia This is only partially a review of the story, but mostly a review on how much I love the No Fear series. It's SO useful. You have Shakespeare on one page, and the 'translation' into modern English on one page. I understand Shakespeare so much better now. I thought I understood Shakespeare when I read version where you have a footnote at the bottom saying what 'grandshire phrase' or something means. I did get the gist of it, but now I understand what the characters are saying and feeling, and I get all the little jokes. I can appreciate Shakespeare now, which was impossible before (then again, I'm only 12, it's probably easier for other people). Not to mention in other versions I would read a little bit, glance down at the footnotes, read, glance down, re-read to find the word in the footnote, et cetera and it was very tedious. Now I just read a page of Shakespeare and then a page of modern, or vice versa. I do vice versa because then I understand how the character feels before reading the lines out loud, making this version very useful for putting on the play. There is one problem. In most editions, you have various essays and notes. They don't have this in here. I don't take of stars for this because I personally never read the essays, but some people might.Anyway, the story itself. Shakespeare is very poetic, and you can appreciate it more if you know what he's talking about. How ever, I hate 'love at first sight' with a burning passion. If you get over that, the characters and plot are engaging.I read this because I was in the play. But this edition is so good I'm going to read other Shakespeare plays for my own enjoyment.

Great Kindle Version By MsEnglishTeacher I am a high school English teacher looking at the different versions of classics texts available for Kindle (fire), so my review will not be for the play itself, but rather for the eBook--readability, layout, price, and other features. This version of Romeo and Juliet is my favorite 99 cent version for several reasons. First, there are links to each act and scene. Next, the page layout is clean and easy to read with spaces between each speaker. Finally, the line formatting is in the correct iambic pentameter format, though there are no line numbers. There are no annotations or explanations, but none of the good 99 cent versions provide that either. Bottom line, easy to use!

The lessons are gently taught through the eyes of much loved senior dogs. Children love the pictures of Winnie (and Narla, too). They ask questions and "get" what Winnie is telling them. I can't recommend them enough. Must reads....over and over.

From the Author As an artist, color is a thing of magic in my life. Color creates shapes, forms, and feelings in the artworks I paint. Laying color onto a blank page is when I feel closest to true magic, when I feel happiest and most relaxed, and it's through what I create that I share my love of magic with the world.Through my coloring books I want to share that same magic with you. The artworks in my books are based on my completed paintings, which I have painted over the last ten years as a professional artist. I have created the coloring designs to be intricate and detailed but still fun and accessible. There is something for lovers of meditative detail while simple enough to not be overwhelming for younger colorists.  When designing my books I decided to print them with two copies of each design, because I know as an artist there are always so many possibilities! I wanted to give everybody the chance of a do-over with every design. Try a different medium, or a different colour scheme. Or a chance to share the magic with a friend, child, parent, sibbling. Because sharing your creativity and joy of color is the best magic of all.

They are one sided so you can use multiple mediums to color with. These are the prettiest fairies I've seen and I'm enjoying coloring them! I've included a picture that I have about 75% finished.

Beautiful Fairies and their loving companions 2 x 25 designs - printed on one side of non-perforated paper By iiiireader [[VIDEOID:9ff17afd0d95a32e1f3bda08fc9c5e00]]This is a book of very pretty adult fairies (female and male) designs along with their devoted and loving companions. They are shown with their dragons, gargoyles, and, in a number of designs, the adult fairies are holding one another in loving embraces. There are 25 different designs, however, what is great is that this artist provides 2 of each design, so you have a total of 50 designs to color (or to share depending on your mood.)As with the previous book that I have by this artist (“Enchanted”), the designs are quite elegant and have a great deal of detail in them. There are several “nudes” where hair and whatnot cover up the strategic areas so that the individuals are not technically nude. The designs flow without harsh corners or many straight lines. The designs are printed on one side of the page with the back left blank. The paper is the thin white that is typical for CreateSpace publishing and is not perforated. The binding is glued rather than sewn in. A few of the design merge into the binding, so removing the page might be a tad difficult without losing some portion of it but for the most part, the portion that would be lost is not essential to the design. The paper is fairly thin and all markers and gel pens leak through. As the back of each page is blank, you can put a piece of card stock or really heavyweight paper under the page you are working on to keep ink from ruining the rest of the book. My coloring pencils worked well with the paper.

“In four wordless spreads, Proimos makes Suzy's awakening powerfully clear.” ―Publishers Weekly on YEAR OF THE JUNGLE, illustrated by James Proimos Jr.

“Proimos's flat, cartoony drawings . . . are sturdy and sweet.” ―Booklist on YEAR OF THE JUNGLE, illustrated by James Proimos Jr.

Amazon.com Review The Thomas à Kempis fan club includes St. Ignatius, Thomas Merton, Thomas More, and even Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. (She reads a chapter of The Imitation of Christ every night before sleep.) Imitation has exerted immense influence on Christian worship, ethics, and church structure, because it gives specific yet broad-minded guidance about the central task of Christian life--learning to live like Jesus. Better to read this book a little here and there, now and then, than to try gobbling it cover to cover. Imitation is no triumph of orderly thinking, but it's a great monument and incentive to deep living. --Michael Joseph Gross

Review If a man tells you that he is fond of the Imitation, view him with sudden suspicion; he is either a dabbler or a saint...Heaven help us if we find easy reading in the Imitation of Christ -- Ronald Knox None, I believe, except the Bible, has been so universally read and loved by Christians of all tongues and sects -- Thomas Carlyle The most influential devotional book in Western Christian history -- Professor John van Engen

Listening with the Heart By Mark Blackburn "Want to know the best advice I ever heard?" asked Larry King, in an interview published today in Canada's National Post newspaper: "I never learned ANYTHING while I was talking." 50 years experience at the interviewer's microphone and Larry's best advice comes down to one word. "Listen!"Coincidentally (or maybe not!) I picked up this just-received book, sent to me by a dear friend who recalled my reviewing an earlier published edition of this same "Ronald Knox translation." And it literally fell open to these words,"By all means ask questions, but LISTEN to what holy writers have to tell you . . . often enough, (when we hear) Holy Scripture, we are distracted by mere curiosity; we want to seize upon some point and argue about it, when we ought to (listen) and move on."I flipped open "The Imitation" just now and my eyes (lately fixated on my newest pride and joy were these: (p 32 under the heading, "ABOUT SELF-CONFIDENCE, AND HOW TO GET RID OF SELF-CONCEIT")"It is nonsense to depend for your happiness on created things (and) why all this self-importance? Do not boast of riches, if you happen to possess them . . . nor about the important friends you have; boast rather of God's friendship."Do not give yourself airs, if you have physical strength or beauty; it only takes a spell of illness to waste the one, or mar the other. Do not be self-satisfied about your own skill or cleverness; God is hard to satisfy, and it is from him that they come, all these gifts of nature."He reads our thoughts, and will only think the worse of you, if you think yourself better than other people. Even your good actions must not be a source of pride to you: If you have any good qualities to show for yourself, credit your neighbor with even better qualities: that is the way to be humble."To be humble is to enjoy undisturbed peace of mind, while the proud heart is swept with gusts of envy and resentment."----Seven years ago (on my birthday actually) I wrote my very first review for Amazon.com -- for an earlier re-print of this same translation. This latest version, from Ignatius Press of San Francisco, is far-and-away the most beautiful and features cover art by Andrea Solario (1480-1540) from the "Galleria Borghese, Rome" -- painted about a century after Thomas a Kempis produced his "Imitation." Inside artwork includes some marvelous, same-period woodcuts by Albrecht Durer.----In his (2005) FOREWARD to this new edition, psychologist and priest Benedict Groeschel (seen by millions on his "Sunday Night Live" TV show on EWTN) recalls stealing his first copy of the "Imitation" from the public library in his Caldwell NJ hometown - slipping it into his schoolbag intending to return it "to its rightful place on the shelf, in two weeks time, the ordinary period for a book loan in those days.""The title suggested to my 12-year-old mind that this must be a story about someone who pretended to be Jesus. I went and sat by a window . . . the spring sun (shining) on the oak table, I can still see my blue-sweatered arm around the book as I began to read:"'Vanity of Vanities - all is vanity except to love God and serve him alone.' At that moment I was electrified, and I sat there reading page after page . . . . for two hours, mesmerized by the book!"----As for the translation? Is it really the best-ever? I stand by my thoughts of seven years ago:"I have several translations of the Imitation but I keep coming back to this one. I believe many readers will find this translation 'flows' better than the others, written as it is in a warm, gentle and accessible style by a master translator and communicator, Monsignor Ronald Knox. A convert to Catholicism who produced an acclaimed Latin-to-English translation of the Bible, Knox completed the first 30 or so chapters of the Imitation before his death in 1957. He wrote to Michael Oakley, two months before his passing: "If I die without finishing my translation, please tell my executors that you are to finish it." The younger Latin scholar did a splendid, seamless job of completing Knox's superb translation of what was--until this century--the second most widely read book in the world. What a delight that this version is once again available, [50 years] after its first publication. If you purchase only one copy of the Imitation in your lifetime, make it this one."

They are depressed, filled with worry and have so little joy in their lives. This book speaks specifically to those problems. In a nutshell this book says that we are miserable because we are trying to find joy in other people and in other things and everything out there will fail us and let us down. The only thing that provides true happiness, peace and contentment is God. The Imitation of Christ goes through exercises on how we can detach ourselves from worldly things to focus on God. Once we are focused solely on God and have the faith that God will provide everything we need, then we can really enjoy the world around us. Enjoy it because once we receive true happiness from God we can see how beautiful the world is and enjoy it as the gift God created it to be, instead of something that we grab onto in the hopes that it will provide us our happiness and security.

By PSusan I don’t know of a better accolade for a book then to tell other readers that my preschool grandson couldn’t wait to hear more of Montgomery Rabbit by Sandy Little. This short chapter book caught his interest and held it. While it is not an extremely long chapter book, it is longer than I wanted to read to him in one setting. Still he did not want me to stop so it definitely holds a 5-year old’s attention. Then when he returned to visit, he would quickly ask to hear more of Montgomery’s adventures. The illustrations are exquisite, pleasing to both young and old. They are the drawing point since the cover caught our eye. However, it is the story itself that kept our interest. Montgomery Rabbit has enough suspense and danger for children without being overly scary. Then there is just the right amount of twist to keep the story from being too predictable. We both found the ending to be bittersweet, wishing for Montgomery not to have to made a choice, but then life is full of choices. Also like Montgomery Rabbit, our world is a big scary place but full of wonderful surprises too. Don’t be afraid to explore and try new things while making friends along the way; a wonderful lesson learned from Montgomery. The publisher through Net Galley provided a copy.

By Grateful Grandma Montgomery is a small, floppy eared house rabbit who falls through a hole in the garden fence one day while watching a rabbit with pointy ears. When he realizes her is unable to get back into his Garden, he follows him. Befriending a wild rabbit called Bentley, the pair set out on an adventure to find the raspberry patch. When Montgomery and Bentley finally find the raspberry patch they come upon his girl. He has to make a decision about what to do at this point that is heartbreaking. This is a very sweet story with wonderful images that are so beautifully detailed that they almost look like photographs. Throughout the book you meet a lot of interesting characters, but none are quite as adorable as Montgomery. As a child, this would have been exactly the sort of book I would have loved. It is a story of friendship, not giving up, helping each other and watching out for dangers in life. A wonderful book and easy for young readers to read as well as being a great read aloud.I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
