Tell Us a Story, Papa Chagall, by Laurence Anholt

From Booklist This picture-book introduction to the life and works of Marc Chagall is told from the perspectives of his twin grandchildren, who are visiting him in the South of France. Chagall shows them several of his most famous paintings and recounts vignettes from his life that detail his happy childhood in Russia; his training at art school; meeting his wife Bella; the birth of his daughter, Ida; coming to America to escape the Nazis; and his prolific work after WWII. Anholt’s colorful, squiggly artwork complements Chagall’s own paintings, six of which are reproduced in the story. Several of Anholt’s illustrations echo Chagall’s works—both in composition and style—which makes for a pleasing mix. Appended with biographical information about Chagall (unfortunately printed on the inside back cover, under the dust jacket flap), this makes a good complement to Michelle Markel’s Dreamer from the Village (2005), which concentrates on the artist’s early life. Grades K-3. --Kay Weisman

Review "As with the previous titles in the series, the artist's life is told in simple narrative and charming Anholt illustrations." Books for Keeps 'The story is told well and the illustrations are charming.' Carousel 'Books that straddle fact and fiction are not the easiest to make work. Laurence Anholt's experience and the confidence of the whole series give these latest books an assuredness and authoritative feel.' Chicken Magazine 'has a breezy charm of which Chagall himself might have approved... Chagall's paintings are dashingly represented and children will enjoy his weightless flying figures and their fantastical freedoms.' -- Kate Kellaway Observer 'For more than 20 years the Anholt's Artists series has been one of the best loved introductions to art for young people... and please don't miss Laurence Anholt's latest masterpiece.' Guardian Kids on Line 'beautiful ... The tenth in a series of true stories about great artists ... exploding with colour, what it encapsulates is so wonderful about Chagall ... Highly recommended. I can think of no better way to introduce artistry to small children.' Daily Telegraph "Laurence Anholt's style suits Chagall perfectly and the story will enchant young art lovers." Angels & Urchins

From the Inside Flap

On a sunny hilltop in the south of France, two children find their grandfather in the company of a pink goat, a strange green man, flying people, and a funny cow wearing a hat!

Their grandfather is famed artist Marc Chagall, and all those strange and wonderful beings are depicted in his paintings. Chagall is best known for his imaginative use of color and imagery. His paintings have made people all over the world happy, even after years of war and sadness.

Here, Chagall tells his grandchildren of his happy life as a child, how he met his wife, and how he and his family escaped the war to come to America. Through it all, the good and the bad, he painted. "In your imagination...you can fly as high as you want," he tells his grandchildren.

Beautifully illustrated with reproductions of some of Chagall's best known work, Papa Chagall, Tell Us a Story is a wonderful introduction to the life and work of the man who told stories in paint!
