You Look Yummy! (Tyrannosaurus Series), by Tatsuya Miyanishi From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Fatherhood was not on the menu. When an unexpected turn of events lands Tyrannosaurus with a newborn ankylosaurus, he feels compelled to take care of this innocent child. Not only does Yummy depend on this gray giant with multicolored highlights, he looks up to him, too, which imbues this foster father with the desire not to disappoint. Tyrannosaurus is one cool dad, defending Yummy from other dinosaurs, teaching him all he knows, and ultimately parting with him because it's what's best for the child. This bittersweet ending leaves readers with the sense that Yummy made an impression on Tyrannosaurus, changing him for good. Miyanishi's art is distinctive; explosive in color with its prehistoric yellow, orange, and green combination; and expressive in form (Tyrannosaurus arches over the gutter as he prepares to eat this tiny morsel). Overall the tone is a mixture of silly, sad, and serious, and yet the style augments this with a range of subtler feelings, showing hints of a father's concern and pride. At times, sound effects enhance the story, while at others, the silence underscores important moments. This is just the first of Tyrannosaurus's stories to be translated, and if all of them explore themes as rich as responsibility and a child's well-being, then hopefully many more will follow. VERDICT A beautiful and unforgettable tale that touches the heart.—Rachel Forbes, formerly of Oakville Public Library, Ontario, Canada
Review "The Tyrannosaurus looks more like a stylized Godzilla than a recognizable dino in the simply drawn pictures, but his toothy fierceness and the extreme size differential between him and tiny 'Yummy' ably capture the episode's essential features. Bold lines and strong color contrasts (plus the odd exploding volcano) give the prehistoric landscape plenty of visual appeal too." —Vicky Smith, Kirkus Reviews "It’s a discussion prompt. Why did he do that? Where is he going? Our preschooler loves drilling down into these questions even when they’re challenging and we’re not mendacious enough to be sly. If yours is the same, this is the book for you." —Michael, thedinglehopper.wordpress.com "There’s more text per page than I would have expected for a book aimed at this age group, but it is perfectly primed for read-aloud and the comic-style illustrations and format are incredibly engaging to look at. I absolutely melted at the twist at the end of the story, too. It was a fantastic way to finish a funny, memorable book." —Bruce Gargoyle, thebookshelfgargoyle.wordpress.com "The bright, stylized illustrations that accompany the text are both poignant and powerful, supporting the story and engaging young audiences from the first page to the last." —Catherine Reed-Thureson, Foreword Reviews "It tells of an impossible kinship between two different dinosaur species from different generations, drawing readers into the world of dinosaurs. The ending of this odd-couple tale will melt your heart." —chopsticksny.com "Overall the tone is a mixture of silly, sad, and serious, and yet the style augments this with a range of subtler feelings, showing hints of a father's concern and pride . . . A beautiful and unforgettable tale that touches the heart." —Rachel Forbes, School Library Journal "The ending is cute and what is needed for a happily ever after. This is for young ones and doesn't take long to read. Just be prepared for the kids to act silly afterwards." —Jo Ann Hakola, ioba.org"Bestselling Japanese artist Miyanishi’s (Mr. Reaper) bold, woodcutlike spreads draw immediate attention . . . . In contrast to his muscular artwork, Miyanishi’s writing tugs at the heartstrings as a newborn Ankylosaurus adopts a Tyrannosaurus Rex as his parent." —Publishers Weekly"Warning: Parents might shed a tear or two at the ending." —Alyson, eatreadandbemommy.com"You Look Yummy! Is an utterly endearing story that touched my heart; and I can see why it’s an international best seller. It’s the best picture book for boys I’ve seen all year." —Susan Roberts, books4thecuriouschild.com"I think probably the best children's book I have read all year!" —Jezire Akin, readjezireread.blogspot.com"I admit it: I’m not much of a dinosaur fan – on the page, anyway. Far too many books starring these behemoth beings seem to loom over my desk. That said, every once in a (long) while, I discover an irresistible prehistoric beast with a story that just melts even my cynical old heart." —Terry Hong, smithsonianapa.org"Children will be instantly attracted to Miyanishi’s illustrations. Throughout its pages, there are artistic touches like a white sky, coloring outside the edges to make the images pop, and hash marks for the dinos that serve as texture 101." —Justin Tadaldi, JQ Magazine"Grab yourself a copy of this beautiful children's story. You will be so happy you did." —A. Renee Hunt, areneehunt.com"I found it to be really cute and a story that I’m sure my son will enjoy. It would be prefect for a bedtime story or just any story time. I would recommend this book for small children, under 7." —dealsandreviewsblog.wordpress.com"The most interesting thing about this book is the ending. It is a happy ending, but a different kind of happy ending we are used to. Be aware that it could seem a little sad at the first moment, but at the same time will bring a great chance to talk about why this is actually a happy ending." —Sandra Lema, reviewsinchalk.blogspot.com

I still have favorites from my own childhood, and I have added some new favorites that I have discovered through my reading adventures with my daughters. I was very excited about the opportunity to read You Look Yummy with my daughters, especially after I found out that this is the first entry in an extremely popular series in Japan, China, Korea, and France. You Look Yummy was written and illustrated by Tatsuya Miyanishi. The story begins with a big bang- quite literally! Volcanoes erupt and earthquakes rumble, and this causes a dinosaur egg to hatch. The baby Ankylosaurus pops out, and nearly meets a bad end at the hands of a gigantic Tyrannosaurus. The little baby thinks that the larger dinosaur is its father, and latches on to him. The gruff carnivore is taken aback by this display of affection, and finds himself protecting baby “Yummy” from another predator. The little Ankylosaurus brings “Daddy” fresh berries after noticing that he doesn’t seem to like eating grass. Daddy Dinosaur also tries to teach Yummy how to do Tyrannosaurus things, like whacking and ramming.I am often reluctant to give away too much, but parents should know that the ending in this story is not necessarily a happy one. The Tyrannosaurus makes sure that Yummy is safe (with other Ankylosauruses), and then slips away. My experience with American picture books seems to result in many happy endings and/or resolution, and it’s worth mentioning so that others will be prepared for a more open-ended conclusion. My girls mentioned that they thought the ending was sad, but they also said that the Tyrannosaurus loved Yummy very much. I will admit that I got a little misty eyed at the Tyrannosaurus’ noble gesture. The illustrations are perfect. Miyanishi uses earth tones for his dinosaur filled world, but the colors are bright. Miyanishi’s drawing style is rather simple, and the Tyrannosaurus is long and sinewy rather than being the squat powerhouse we are more familiar with. Yummy is as cute as a button; he is so small that he is often a little hard to see, but this seems to be intentional to illustrate the difference in size between the two dinosaurs.I would absolutely recommend You Look Yummy to others. My girls are in first grade and third grade, and they enjoyed reading this story with me, but I think that children in preschool would enjoy this book as well. This book will definitely appeal to fans of dinosaurs because there is plenty of dinosaur action. I loved the sweet message about a father’s devotion to his son. I hope that the rest of this series is translated to English- I need to know what happens next with the Tyrannosaurus and Yummy!I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

A beautiful tale about nurturing and protection By Storywraps This prehistoric tale is written to showcase long, long time ago when dinosaurs still roam the earth and the earth is plagued with volcanoes, earthquakes and stark barrenness.A baby Ankylosaurus hatches from his egg and finds himself all alone in this dangerous world without anyone to nurture and protect him. He cries because of his abandonment and trudges along to seek companionship. He bumps into a huge, Tyrannosaurus Rex who drools hungrily over him and is ready to pounce on the suffering little guy because he looks so yummy! To the Tyrannosaurus's utter surprise the little Ankylosaurus grabs onto his leg and calls out, "Daddy!" Totally stunned the big "T"'s heart completely melts by this loving encounter and he decides right then and there to take care of this little guy despite their differences. The little tyke keeps telling him over and over, "I wanna be big JUST LIKE YOU, Daddy."A mean, nasty Chilantaisauraus approaches and tries to snatch the little Ankylosaurus and gobble him up. The big "T" rises to his full height and fights for the safety of his new little adoptee. Big daddy saves his son from destruction. Proudly the big "T" teaches the little fellow the art of being a dinosaur causing the bond between them to deepen even more."Then, one evening, the Tyrannosaurus said to Yummy, I taught you everything I could, Yummy. So, it's time to say goodbye now."How will baby Ankylosuarus respond to that announcement? Will he be abandoned once again by someone he truly loves and wants to be with forever? Will Tyrannosaurus Rex just leave the poor little guy to fend for himself in a world full of danger and run off and leave him? Well run off he did...well they both did...and you will be surprised what happens next...........Tatsuya Miyanishi explores in this colourful story what family really means and the ending he writes is very heartwarming and memorable indeed.

This story stars prey-turned-child, Yummy (an ankylosaurus) and the predator-turned-daddy, a vicious t-rex with a soft spot for hugs and berries. I do not like to tell the whole story with my reviews, but I felt it was necessary with this one. So...SPOILER ALERT. The book starts off really cute with Yummy getting separated from his family after a random volcano. Suddenly, he comes upon the t-rex who says, “You look yummy.” Our clueless, naive little critter thinks the t-rex is naming him Yummy. Many touching moments follow, as the t-rex cannot bring himself to eat Yummy. Instead, he becomes an adopted father--protecting Yummy, teaching him to defend himself, and just being his companion. Then, at the end of the story the t-rex convinces Yummy to run a race with him, only the t-rex doesn’t run. By the time Yummy turns around, the t-rex is gone and Yummy is with his own kind. This story has wonderful, sharp-lined illustrations where it is easy to see the difference between the powerful, scary t-rex and the cute little Yummy. Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the ending.Look. I get it. The theme of this book is supposed to be, “Sometimes if you truly love someone/something you have to let it go. I get the message. I use the message dozens of times in the summer when my daughter finds crickets, frogs, and lizards. The problem here is the delivery. The book ends with Yummy staring blankly in the distance as the only parent he has ever known has just abandoned him. Sure, Yummy is with his own kind now, but what does that tell us? WHO ARE THEY? I take this from the perspective of a child--including the questions my child asked me.The reader is supposed to be comforted by the fact that Yummy is now with two of his own, perhaps his biological parents (we are not told that). My daughter was really confused and thought the book had another page to it. Then the questions began. Why did he leave Yummy? (Well, he eats little dinosaurs.) Then why did he take care of Yummy? (Well, he felt sorry for Yummy and then they became close.) Then, why would he have eaten him? Did Yummy even want to be with the two other ankylosaurs? Are they going to take care of him? If they are going to take care of him, then why do they look so confused; they don't look happy to see him!True, perhaps the t-rex was being a good father by letting Yummy go, but do something to let us know that. The final picture is not Yummy in the embrace of two of his same species--it is him staring in the distance while two of his kind mostly just stare blankly, as well. At least show them hugging or give some indication that they want to be with Yummy. The average child is smart enough to realize that the t-rex could have picked literally any two ankylosaurs on the planet to leave Yummy with. Obviously they didn’t do so well protecting him from getting separated in the first place. While You Look Yummy is a cute and entertaining book with an attempt at a heart-warming daddy’s love letting the little one go, the “blood over bond” conclusion really seems to be no conclusion at all. I share my daughter’s confusion--what exactly is the moral? A book that had so much potential just falls apart at the end. Maybe a Maury-osaurus could have come in at the end of the book to tell Yummy that they found his real parents. *Something* to show that Yummy wasn’t just filled with a depressed, abandoned feeling for the rest of his life.“Yummy, why don’t you want to go to prom?”“She’ll just leave me there to go home with Chad. She’ll abandon me, too, just like the t-rex that adopted me. His name was Chad, too.”Nice work, Chad. Nice work.*I received a free electronic copy of this book for the purpose of providing my honest review of the book.
